vibration on used car
vibration on used car
Hi all
Thinking about joining you as a G35 obsessive owner
so I've been looking at several lately.
I looked at one today that is a pretty good deal and drives very well for the most part. But at around 20-25mph there is a weird vibration that seems to increase with speed but goes away around 30mph. It is not apparent on the highway at all.
The salesman asked to drive the car and said it feels weird to him as well, it feels almost like a bad ball joint in the front right wheel, but if that were the problem wouldn't it increase with speed and be apparent on the highway?
When we got back to the dealership, the smooth-talking manager immediately said it's because the car has hard compound tires on it and it's normal for G35's to have that vibration around those speeds with those kinds of tires. I am wondering if what he said has any truth to it (because right now I think it does not). Because if this were the case, why would it seem that the vibration is only coming from the front right of the car?
Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Seems like the wheels are out of balance?.. A wheel/tire balance and alignment should cure the vibration. Although it could be a bent wheel or a problem with the suspension.

Wheel balance.
Bearings depending on how many miles on G.
Bad ball joint would feel like road grabbing and throwing you around a little.
Alignment.
Bad tire feathering.
Hard compound tires lol!!

I had this same problem. Are all of the tires the same brand/wear? Before I bought my sedan I took it to Nissan to have them check it all out and they said the vibration came from an off-brand tire. They told me that anywhere they put the tire on the car the vibration moved with it. They also checked the alignment, balance, bearings, etc. and found nothing off or broken.
Once I got 4 matching tires it went away.

I was also thinking maybe a balance issue. Yes, it is an Infiniti dealership.
It is an '04 coupe with 40,000 miles, and it did not feel like the road grabbing me or pushing me around at all, just a weird consistent vibration.
In the nicest way possible I told the manager that "hard compound tires" do not cause an issue like this. He immediately starting blabbing his mouth about different things it could be which is annoying, but I understand it's his job. So I told him if they can fix the problem, whatever it may be, by Monday afternoon I'll come over to buy the car.
Hopefully they can figure it out!

I keep seeing posts like this and I don't understand why you don't just walk away. There are plenty of used cars available, especially in this buyer's market. Why would you even continue to consider a suspicious car?
I've had my G for a couple of months now and I spent 6 months looking for a good used one. That time was not wasted because by the end, I knew exactly what I wanted and what problems to look for. When I found the right car I knew it right away and walked out with it. No regrets.
