Got Pulled Over For Exhaust @_@..

If you want to criticize what I think is a senseless law let's pick on Seat Belt laws. It has no effect on anyone other than the non-belted driver or adult passenger. Yet in many states they constitute the basis for a primary stop. Even if only a passenger is not belted up.

I don't think you realize how much money 1 traffic fatality ends up costing the state. I don't have the exact amount but I am pretty sure it's over 1mil -due to an investigation and report that will involve probably more than a just a few state workers. States view seatbelts as HUGE life(money) savers.
EDIT: Not to mention how many criminals and contraband are removed from the streets from simple traffic stops. You would have to assume police would exploit that.

Just to add my 2¢.... accidents also cost millions to hospitals. We eat this often b/c motorists aren't always insured, are poorly insured or b/c they hit others who aren't covered. One accidents w/o safety belt especially can cost the hospital (and ultimately you) >$50K, which we have to pass on to others. And if there is traumatic brain injury that requires SSI benefits and rehab, the lifetime cost can exceed, $1,000,000. So everyone is affected. In another example, look at helmet laws-- bikers successfully have lobbied to have many repealed or not put on the books. In a serious accident, we get these guys in ER-- no insurance. Taxes pay some, your insurance rates go up b/c we have to raise rates to survive and the cycle is repeated yearly. Nothing is ever simple.

If you read my statement carefully I DID NOT advocate disuse of the seatbelt. I always buckle up and it upsets me when others I drive with don't. My criticism is based solely on consideration of the Constitutionality of enforcement of the requirement as a primary basis for commencing a traffic stop.
Why do you doubt it when as a professional in the profession I tell you that most outstanding warrants and seizures of contraband occur in traffic stops?
These are the facts.
I suggest reading U.S. Supreme Court opinions like Delaware v. Prouse, and New York v. Belton, Michigan v. Long, U.S. v. Ross so you can a whole body of constitutional law framed around special need of law enforcement to engage in surveillance of vehicles their occupants and contents. Synopses can be found on Wikipedia. These cases, all involving arrests made pursuant to traffic stops, did not become landmark cases from the Supreme Court for nothing.

I got pulled over one time for going 5 mph over the speed limit. ok you got me but at the same time I was asked if it is ok to search my backpack...didnt seem like reasonable suspision but anything in plain sight at any time for any stop is subject to search. You can refuse however it is your right, but then you are subject to harrassment..something to ponder. Be safe out there kids.

I'm completely confused here..... what's the REAL problem with the "normal" exhaust system that comes with the car (unless your trying too increase power by a whopping 5-10% and mpg by 1-2 mpg)? The exhaust does make sense for those who race, but around town..... I'm lost here.
Splain it to me Lucy!

Living in Central and South America for 13 years, I trust no cop-- they're easily bought and can make $300-500 per day through squeezing touristas and locals.

I guess its a way to make your car stand out from the rest of the crowd, and I don't blame them.

Actually, I see your point.
There is no problem with the stock exhaust, sure there is a slight increase in power if it's done right but a lot of the guys look for a deeper rumble to give the car a more intimidating sound. Why were muscle cars loud? because they sound bad ***!

In my opinion, a car should sound great under the hood, not in the back.
I do like the way mine sounds on startup and it's fine during hard acceleration, but while driving it's a bit wearing having this growl coming from behind me anytime my foot is on the gas pedal. Even cruise control doesn't contain the noise.

Seems a few manufacturers such as BMW, Mini, and now even Nissan, in the new Z-car, have installed resonator tubes which amplify sound from the engine intake manifold to the passenger cabin. Guess it's cheaper than designing the engine to fire and resonate with a more melodic sound.
Thanks but no thanks for any such resonator tube.
