Suspension & Shocks Questions, Help

I got an 03 G35 Coupe with about 80K on it. To me it seems like my shocks or suspension or both if they're any differences needs to be replaced. My question is, if I take it to go get checked out, what are some of the things I should look for that's going to tell me that's the problem. To me the ride is kinda bumpy hard, so what I'm looking to do is if I have to replace anything I want the ride to feel softer smoother ride. Also, what are some good shocks, springs I should look for, brand name. Not looking to spend too much but not looking for cheap parts either. Right now I have the 18 stock wheels on for the winter but I have 20 inch rims I'll put back on in the Spring time. I was also thinking that if I had to replace the shocks and springs that maybe I wanted to lower the car by 1/2 inch. Not too sure if that's a good idea, but if I do is there anything else I have to look into doing for the car not to run into any other problems? Any information on this topic would be good, just need to know what to look for so I can keep doing some research before I go ahead and get the work done to the car. Thanks in advance.
