Key question

I bought my 06 G35 Sedan in December. It has the intelligent key option. The used car dealer had two I-keys, one wallet key, and one valet key. The intelligent keys work just fine. I decided today that it might be a good idea to check out the non-Intelligent keys just to make sure they work. Here's what I found out.

Mech key 1 (from my I-key) doesn't work the doors, doesn't open the pass through to the trunk, but DOES run the ignition.

Mech key 2 (from my wife's I-key) works the doors, trunk pass-thru, and ignition.

Wallet Key opens the doors but not the pass-thru or the ignition.

Valet Key opens the doors, not the pass-thru, not the ignition.

So, Basically, Mech key 2 works just fine. The Wallet key works just like its supposed to. However, the valet key and Mech key 1 aren't working right.

I noticed that the Mech key seems to be cut differently than the others (like it didn't get cut right).

By the way, the valet key will work if I have the intelligent key in my pocket. So I was wondering if that could mean the valet needs programed to the car? But then again, who knows, you might be able to turn the ignition with anything if you have the I-key in your pocket.

I thought maybe I could go to a regular locksmith and see if they can recut the profile on mech key 1 to match mech key 2 and not have to pay to get a new key. Any suggestions on what might be wrong or how to get everything working right?

Ideas?

Thanks

Nah, the car senses the chip inside the I-key...thats why it starts up. In order to start u need two things:

1. Correctly cut key.
2. Correctly programmed chip (which is usually in the I-key or valet key)

You cant just stick a screwdriver in the ignition and start it w/ the I-key in ur pocket. Looks like u need to program the valet key to ur car, recut Mech key 1 because it looks completely different (although i dont know how its turning ur ignition)

I have to get a key cut myself this friday, cost to cut @ dealership: $79, cost to program cut key $90...total $169. Damn these dealerships are raping my wallet.

Thanks, that's what I figured.

As I understand it, I have to get all the keys reprogrammed to the car if I get one done. Is that right?

If you hold the mech 1 key over mech 2, it looks like the profile of mech 2 could be cut out of mech 1. In other words, there are no extra cuts in Mech 1, just things that need to be cut away. There's an old school locksmith in town. I was going to see if he can could fix mech 1. Figure if it doesn't work, you can't break it. Besides, even if it cost $50, it would still be cheaper than a new one since the chip works.

No, you only have to get the one key programmed...they program it according to your VIN.

I'm pretty sure they have to take all your keys and reprogram them together.
