G35's are great

I have around 60k on my 03 G35 sedan (bought it used with 29k) and have had no major issues. I had the same reservations about the G before I bought mine and this forum helped me make the right decision.

Any issues I did have were either covered by the dealer or very cheap to repair. Since I owned it the front seat rails had to be replaced as it was rocking which is a common problem (fixed under warranty), and I had the rear axle click that was repaired by the dealer for $100 (this is common as well as there is a TSB for it). Other then those two issues I haven't had any major problems and these may not even be problems on the coupe.

The other issue I was worried about when I bought my G was the oil consumption issue and after reading up on it and looking through this forum I realized it was more of an issue (and a small one at that) with the rev-up motors not on the 03-04 motors so I wouldn't let that hinder your decision.

Lastly I was reading an article lately and over the past few years the Japanese luxury cars and been becoming more reliable then the German luxury cars (BMW, MB, etc) and if something does break they are cheaper to fix anyway.

Sorry for the long post and hope this helps.

PS..if you are really that worried about something breaking get an extended bumper to bumper warranty when you buy it. With the car market the way it is you can probably get them to throw it in for almost free!DOMO

Japanese cars always HAVE been more reliable. It's why they started selling so well in the united states in the first place back a long time ago, I think the 60's or 70's.

Thanks for the catch as I realize what I wrote was incorrect!

What I meant to say was in the past few years a lot of people/media have realized that the German luxury cars aren't as reliable as people think they are and are very expensive to fix and have shifted towards the Japanese luxury cars.

I would like to think in a few years a Japanese lux will surpass the 3-series as the entry level sports sedan (hopefully the G and I think it is already better)!

It is like everyone thinking VW's are super reliable when in fact they have become very unreliable (as mentioned earleir in this thread) over the years but are relying on the name!

Yeah thanks a lot Rich, your long post did help me out. Im probably going to go with the extended warranty and before my g i was thinking of getting a 04 5 series and completely changed my mind with all the problems i read about them. It would of probably cost me more to repair the car then the car itself. Japanese over german any day. I had a 98 Lexus es300 before and since day one I have NEVER had ONE problem with the car. Loved the lexus but it was time for a little upgrade and hopefully I feel the same way about infiniti.

I've found it cheaper to find OEM 19"s with tires that people are selling! I picked up a set with practically new Potenzas for way too cheap. I almost felt bad during the transaction, but he was the one that stated the price!

Except that Nissan hasn't exactly been on par with Honda/Toyota in terms of reliability. In fact, in 1998/1999 they were on the verge of bankrupcy due to lackluster products and reliability issues. Granted, the G35 has been one of these shining points and they move to turn that image around in the last 6-7 years

Consumer Reports and other car rating magazines consistently rate the G as one of the best cars made in terms of reliability and dependability. The solution is to educate yourself and read Edmunds, Road and Track and Consumer Reports, and True Delta--- you'll be glad you did.

Also, this is just me but I would seriously hesitate before buying a used coupe.... Coupe drivers tend to be very hard on their cars and what may look good can hide problems in the drivetrain due to being throttled heavily. Much of this won't show up on an inspection by your mechanic, but oftentimes emerges as the car "prematurely" ages (kinda like what tobacco does to the lungs even tho the face may still look young and fresh). I'm not suggesting all coupe drivers drive like NASCAR racers, but the lion's share do.

My 04 has been trouble free except for the CD/Radio/sound system, other than that it's immaculate and drives smoothly!

Some of the common issues i've seen on this site.

03's have issue with a/c controller/radio board causing loss of radio/HVAC while driving. Also happens to some 04-later cars

rev-up engine oil consuption issue

valve cover oil leak due to plastic covers and o-rings that tends to leak oil into the spark plug holes

rear end click

rear windows make noise over bumps

compression rods

rear axle click

loose front seat tracks

Those seem to be the ones i read about the most on here.

Mustang is right, just keep in mind that all cars have issues. There was period there when the highest rated Lexus was having a serious oil sludge and pooling problem (not reported or seen in the magazines that touted its superiority over other cars) with serious engine failures. So yeah, the G has problems... but for me, they're minor and manageable in comparison to most American and European models.

Consumer reports does give the G a check-mark for a good buy, and the M35 even much higher ratings.
