Tip the Service Manager?

A new topic spawned off another recent thread.

Do you guys tip anyone at the dealership when you have work done on your cars? It has never even occurred to me. I may hook him up phat next time I'm in, if I've been remiss.

I always tip my tech's but all my work is done on the side.

My brother who is a service manager at Nissan says that tipping your service manager/writer couldn't hurt, but it will just show him/her how much more you could have spent.

If it's warrantied work, tip. If not, don't unless you were taken care of. Remember that if a service writer discounts your service it is coming out of their monthly labor totals which they get commissioned on.

I have worked at a dealership since 2001 and have never, ever heard of tipping anyone in service. I guess it is like anything else though, if you had great service I'm sure they would appreciate a tip. I would not feel obligated to do it though.

Service manager? Hell no.

Tech working on my car when I had the V1 hard-wired, the alignment done, etc.? Yes - well worth the $20 ahead of time with "I know you do great work, so please take good care of her".

Maybe things are different here on the east coast. When I worked for a dealer in late 80's early 90's as a tech I got tips regularly. I sure as hell remember those people and did the little extra's on the vehicle.
As I stated in another thread 20 bucks goes along way. It could be as simple as the service manager making sure I'm first in and get my car back quickly. Could be when they do brakes they clean the inside of rim while it's off. All little things--but time saving things for me.

That's my .02cents!

Do not tip them! Like TwilightBlue said - it will show them how much you could've spent. Besides, you normally get raped on the service fees anyway! Unless the tech absolutely bent over backwards for you and made a miracle happen, I say don't tip.

Not sure if you know, but you could've programmed the key fob yourself in less than a minute and saved yourself 2 hours and $100....

Anyway, I don't tip the service folks. I'm already paying too much for the parts and service as it is....

I found several sets of instructions involving inserting and removing the key several times, but they didn't work.

I'm more pissed off about the 2 hours than the $100.
