What does VQ stand for????

Just like the title says, I cannot for the life of me find out what the 'vq' in VQ35DE stands for. Everything else I can find, just not the VQ.

I ask because I work for Nissan and we had a rep come in today and tell me it stood for 'very quiet'. That is ridiculous to me and I refuse to believe it! Somebody help me out. I'm thinking it has to have something to do with it being a V6, because all Nissan V-configuration engines start with V, but I am really grasping at straws here. Thanks for any help!

Do you think a rep would lie?

Hmm, I wish I would have asked. Next time mine comes in I'll ask. Doubt he'll know, but our Infiniti trainer may .

The rep was joking dude.

The first two letters in the engine code of a Nissan engine simply denotes the engine family. AFAIK the V does stand for a V configuration as all of Nissan's recent V6 and V8 engine codes have started with a V. The second letter is usually arbitrary (e.g. VG, VQ, VH, VK etc...) but I've noticed repeated use of the letter D to denote a diesel (e.g. RD, YD, ZD) in Nissan's oil burners.

So for the most part, the first two letters of a Nissan engine code are arbitrary...except when the first letter is a V which denotes a V engine configuration and except when the second letter is a D which denotes a diesel. At least the rest of the code is easy to decipher.

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate the feedback. As far as the rep lying to me, he said that and when I questioned him using the fact that all of Nissan's V-configuration engines start with a V he told me that was just what he was told by people in Tennessee. Does that mean the GT-R's VR means Very Race? And the Titan's VK means Very Killer? Yeah this 'rep' just repeats whatever he is told to us. He has no idea what he is talking about. So I take everything he says with a grain of salt, especially when he pulls up in an Xterra demo to talk to us about available technology. Wow.

Anyway, sorry for the rant and thanks again.

i love how Nissan names their engines. IMO, they have the best naming technique in the entire auto industry.
