it was not down hill :O straight road, and you have to drive a mile for it to have a reading when you reset :O

There are far too many variables in play to get any kind of accuracy from a very short trip, especially when measured on an inaccurate machine.

You may indeed have gotten 34.5 mpg for your short trip, but barometric pressure, air temp, humidity, road temp and condition, wind speed and direction, among others would all have come into play and could easily affect your results in a fairly big way. Lower the pressure, increase the humidity and temp (both air and road surface), drive on a slightly rougher road with a slight head wind, and that number could easily drop by 10 mpg. When you're operating at the far right side of a bell curve, it doesn't take much to bring you back to the norm.

I was driving out of Colorado into Kansas once with a steady 30 mph tail wind and got about 37 mpg in my old Maxima. Accurate? Sure. Greatly affected by external forces? Absolutely.

that reading just goes to show it takes little power to keep the car moving down the highway, especially at 50mph. When I had a loaner sedan I hit reset at a stop and then smashed the gas...I think it read about 10 mpg!

my old DD would get 42 mpg driving it like I stole it. I managed to get as high as 46 a few times.

I check my average every couple of tanks, I do the mileage vs what I put in and I typically see between high 20.xx and high 22.xx It all depends on how I drive it for that period, but I would say most of my driving is street aggressive. I never take my time going anywhere unless the po-po is within sight. its been this way ever since I bought the car over a year ago. I usually get around 350-375 miles from a tank.
