Should I have to put gas in a loaner car?

My G35 is in the shop for the 3rd attempt at a warranty repair. The loaner my wife got is low on gas. I would have noticed before leaving the dealer, but she didn't. It's well below a quarter tank of gas and we've had it 1 day.
Should I fill it and give the receipt to the dealer, or put in just enough to get us by until we return it?

I never did

Check the paperwork you got with the car.

It might be stated in there the you must return with same amount of fuel.

The few times I had the car in the shop and needed a loaner, I just filled it to where it was when I got it. Hopefully it's indicated on the loaner sheet, but I don't remember if it was....

I personally never bothered filling up a loaner if I just had it for a day or two. The one time that I had it for two months, I filled it up quite a bit. I'd just put a few gallons in it and forget about it. If you were driving your own car, you'd be burning the gas anyway.

Actually, part of the paperwork you sign off on requires you to replace the gas that you use.

My dealership's policy is to give the car to a customer with 1/4 tank of gas. You are required to give it back to them with the same amount.

They are loaning you a $35K automobile to drive around in for free while they fix your car. Why would you think they would be responsible for gas you would have had to buy anyway if you had your own car?

When I get one with a MPG readout I simply keep track of miles and replace based on the MPG. sometimes simply a gallon or so. It is about 100 miles to and from the dealer and I figure I already are giving them my time, they don't need anything extra.

Yeah I'm too nice and I usually fill the tank up. But I also drive 100 miles a day to work and I don't want to worry about not having enough fuel.

My dealer hits me with a $10 fuel charge before I even take the car but doesn't require it to be filled back up before bringing it back. Always get it with a full tank too

typically a dealer is not going to charge you if you do not "replace" the gas you used - but there are a couple things to consider...

1) it's simply common courtesy to refill what you used. I mean seriously, why should the dealer pay for your gas??? They wouldn't have paid for it in your car. You use the loaner for the same thing you use you own car - pay for your own damn gas!

2) if everyone acted like douchbags and phucked up the cars and ran them dry and/or simply not refilling what they use, eventually there would be no loaner program.

Use common sense and common courtesy.
