Totally with the OP for taping it off. It takes less than a minute to tape around it. If you can have extra protection for accidents, why not?

It's really not even a question if you contemplate that there is always a possibility of something like that (paint damage) occurring. So I guess my thought would be: Why WOULDN'T you tape it off...?

To each their own though.
i totally agree with you 100%.. again i never said you were wrong... whatever works for you to get the job done.. i use good 'ol elbow grease while you were probably using a polishing machine... that's why i mentioned i never go beyond my headlights when i "scrub"...

Gotchya...no biggie either way.

The Meguiars kit comes with a little polishing wheel, so I was using that in a right angle drill.

Did you use the Turtle wax or Rain-X kit? They're the only other two I saw and they both had varying grits of "sandpaper" rather than a wheel.

you can get more of that yellow out if you use a high powered buffer. I recently had this done at a body shop and my lights went from yellow to brand new looking.

I got the identical results with 1 tablespoon of toothpaste and a moist microfiber towel and some minor elbow grease, cleaned it off with water and then once dried, put 3 coats of Collinite 845 Insulator wax.

All of the headlight cleaners use mild abrasives/polishes, which is the core substance in toothpaste.

I believe basically any headlight will discolor over time in the same conditions.
ie: If your car is outside all the time, in the sun, if you don't do preventive maintenance.. they will probably discolor.

I see. What about if there's a clear bra installed?

I think it has to do with the quality of the plastic/lens. We also have a 2001 Acura MDX and the headlights have never been discolored, the same thing for my son's Honda Civic. All of my Volvos had discoloration problems.

You have great taste in polishes. Exactly what I use along with the ZCS and Natty's Blue wax. Car looks brand new.
