5A/T question

ok, I have a 04 g35 coupe 5at. When i bought the car, i bought the automatic because my wife doesnt like to drive a stick. I would love to have the 6 speed, but she would be pissed if i got a manual. so in an effort to make us both happy, i had a thought. swap a 6sp automatic into the car....i need to know if its possible and where i can find some info. thanks

Is it really worth it to do a whole transmission swap just to get 1 more gear?

Or for less, you could just buy a peppy little car with a m/t in it.
Seriously.
No, really you could, I'm not joking.

And what would make your wife more pissed? Being without her car for months while you try and build a frankenstien car, only to end up with something that no maintenance shop can fix in case of problems - or - selling your 5AT and replacing it with a G35 6MT and her having to drive a stick?

buying another car isnt an option, neither is selling this one. and im not concerned about problems. i am an ASE certified mechanic of 10 years. the issue I am having is finding parts that i will need at a reasonable price. i dont feel like $7,000 for a trans is a reasonable price. thats *** rape. I am also struggling with conversions. This i my first import so I am trying to research what will and wont work.

I also will be building the engine, prolly not the engine thats in it, was considering the VQ37VHR, but havent found one, anywhere. so in the event of not having the VHR as an option, i will prolly try to find a VQ35HR to build. my plan is to have the engine and trans built and ready to swap before i ever park the car.

But spending thousands on a transmission AND engine swap just to gain another gear so you can claim to have a 6-speed is? There's no way in hell that you're going to purchase a replacement transmission, make necessary modifications to get it to work in your current car and have it run for less than the lost money from selling your 5AT and buying a 6MT. Not knowing your wife, I cannot say that you'll endure less verbal abuse by swapping for a 6MT than messing with the 5AT/6AT swap.

Just pick up a supercharger kit, install it, and forget you ever wanted another gear.

Where were you going to find a 6-speed automatic transmission for this car again?

Why would a 6 spd auto be better than a 5 spd auto?

And 7k for a trans is about what they cost unless you get lucky or have connections. These aren't gm t-56s you can pick up for 500 bucks.

You're looking at dollars any way you look at it! Why in the world would you want a 6 speed auto. The new G37 auto is a seven speed. All the manufacturers that are upgrading their autos are going with 7 speeds. If you're having shifting problems why not just install a transmission valve body upgrade to your auto being an ASE mechanic you can do it yourself and should be able to do it on the cheap. Exactely what do you think a 6 speed auto is going to do for you?

the verbal and maybe physical abuse would be alot to bare....lol

the claim of a 6 speed is not whats driving this.....i am not a man of claims, i am a man of function. a supercharger would increase the power, and torque, but would do nothing for it after 100+ mph. the idea being that an engine is only as powerful as the transmission it drives, a 600hp VQ would only be for a "claim" without a wide drivetrain to stretch the vq's legs.....maybe i am being to critical about this project, which is possible. maybe i should just lower my final drive with a supercharger.....
