Will this work? Wheel/tire basic question

I have a couple questions:

1. 17" Sedan 6-spoke wheels, are they 7.5 inches wide?
This website says they are: Wheelsandcaps.com

2. Will tires that are 225/50/17 and 225/55/17 work on these? the rim seems to be much smaller at 7.5 inches and the tire is 225mm which i think is 8 something... Tire rack says 215x17 is what they recommend...

Yes. I believe they are 7.5 in. I don't think there is any adverse effect on going up to a 55 series tires. So yes, they will work.

Looks like they are 7.5" wide. A 225/50-17 will fit wheels 6.0 - 8.0" wide. Common size to use for winter tires/wheels.

I run 245/55's on my 17" OEM wheels (rear set) and the fit is perfect. The car is about 1" taller than OEM (no rubbing and it doesn't look like a truck tire), which works great in the snow and with all the potholes. It is also much, much smoother than a lower profile tire, especially if the car has been lowered. I also get better mileage than OEM tires (215/55's): 23-24 highway then to 26-29 highway now with the 245's.

Good luck and hope this helps.
