Which model year G35/37 should I buy?
Which model year G35/37 should I buy?
Hi all,
This is my first post here, so forgive me if I leave anything out. I'm looking for some buying advice.
I've been a very happy Nissan 350Z Track owner for 6 years, and I'm ready to upgrade to something a little more luxurious. I've been a big fan of the Nissan platform and styling and think the Infinity G-series will be a good fit for me.
So the question I have is, what model/year should I consider? When buying a car, I usually like to get one with low miles that's a year or two old. I like the idea of some other sucker taking a hit on the depreciation instead of me.
I believe I'd settled on the Infiniti Coupe Journey, I'm just not sure if I should stick to a G37, or maybe get a good deal on a recent G35.
Is there any issues with the older model?
Are there any must-have features of the new one?
Are there certain years I should avoid?
I'm looking for:
1) Comfortable ride, inside and out
2) High-tech (Bluetooth, iPod dock, navigation, etc.)
3) Great stereo
4) Great performance/reliability
I'm planning on spending around $30K (+/- $5K) but could be talked into spending more if I need to. Can someone rattle off what the key features of the G37 are over the G35?
Thanks for any advice you all have, I appreciate it!

g37
The only thing I can say is 1, 2, and 4 are definites (as compared to g35). Dunno how the stereo is. I own an 06, and its not necessarily a great performance car, especially for someone who's coming from a z.
Key features of a g37? Awesome interior. Updated-looking navigation. Gearing that somehow makes it pull harder off the line, and also have better fuel economy. need i say more?
Oh yea, a big minus, hideous rear.
I'm not sure which year, but from owning a 2003 and 2006 g35, i've realized they work out kinks after the first year, so thats good to keep in mind.

There are a lot of people who don't care for the Bose stereo in the G37 premium package. Main thing is it's a bit weak on bass, but I dialed the bass all the way up and faded it a tick to the rear, and it's acceptable.
There's also a great deal of controversy over the 7speed automatic. Lots of complaints about rough shifts, fluttering of the torque converter under light accel from 40-50, etc. I really like it, though. Better trans than the 5EAT in my '08 Subaru Legacy GT, and that was a very good trans.

Id go with 06 g coupe, just because I love the way it looks. I cant stand the looks of the g37, but I think it may fit your criteria better... Id go test drive them both and see which you like better.. GL!
Haha, I own an 06 coupe and I love it...It has the projector headlights that the 05- didn't have and different tails. It also has the upgraded interior.
The g37 on the other hand, has a WAY better interior and, in my opinion, looks more luxurious. The rear looks hideous though D:
Test drive both and see for yourself!

Thanks a lot for the responses.
You have me second guessing getting a G37 now. I agree that the G35 looked a lot better. That chrome strip on the back of the G37 is awful. But I really want all the interior niceties and modern tech.
Right now, I'm leaning towards a '10 (I was told the '08 & '09s don't have HD navigation screen, USB port, DVD playback). I'm tired of driving stick (have been for the last 35 years) so I plan to get the AT. I don't like sedans, the full size back seats would go to waste most of the time, so I want the coupe. How's this sound? 2010 Infiniti G37 Journey Coupe with the Premium and Navigation Packages. Do I need the Sport Package? I want it to look nice, but I don't plan on taking it to the track. I already had my fun with the Z.
Can I fit a couple friends in the back seat to drive to lunch, or are they totally useless? They don't need to be comfortable for a 15 min. drive, they just have to fit.
I'm trying to gather as much info before I get a test drive because once those dealers get your name they never leave you alone.
You have me a lot to think about though, thanks again!

Sport package will get you 19in. wheels and a stiffer suspension. If you want a really comfortable ride, you don't need it. My dad has a G37 sedan and my brother has an 07 G35 sedan, and I can tell you that the interior on the G37 fixed every tiny gripe I had with the G35. The 7AT in the G37 is also much better than the 5AT in the G35. Don't know about the back seats but I imagine the are a little more spacious than my 04 G35 Coupe which do the job of carrying people fine.
One thing to think about that nobody has mentioned yet is the differences between the steering wheel design and seat... The G35 locks you in way more and you have a better feel, the G37 is geared wayyy more toward luxury as far as the seat and wheel are concerned.. but like you said you've already experienced the z and if you want all the other great things that come with the 37, id say its for you. I'm sure once you drive both you'll understand what im trying to get at

Good luck!

I was conflicted as well, but the #2 requirement of your put me in the 05/06 - if you're looking for your #2 requirement - TECH, you can't do a G37.
Yes, it comes standard with very basic bluetooth, aux inputs and possibly navigation, but it's so, so far away from any half-decent aftermarket headunit that there's no competition. Since putting aftermarket headunits in the G37s isn't going to happen without some serious custom work, the 06 coupe is the way to go.

I would go with a newer G35. I have not driven a g37 but my G father got a 37 for a loaner for a couple days. He was not impressed. He thought the 37 was less sporty and felt no better than the g35 overall. He decided to go with a new ACCORD instead lol
. They still have the O.G. 03 G35 coupe.

Like Wrathernaut said the upgraded nav/audio is ezpz with some quick aftermarket and you're golden. Exterior of the G37 looks like crap in the rear. Front is alright.
Only thing you're getting with the G37 is the engine and fuel economy. If these aren't a major issue for you and you want the style/looks then go for the G35.
