What's the dumbest thing you've ever done while DIY??
^Ouch
Stupidest mistake while doing a Diy
Me cleaning my car after coming back from my country. Car was sitting for 1 n half month. Had a bit a debri on the car from the building garage. (dont noe where it came from)
So i 1st wipe off the Debri and jerk the towel.
Stupid i didnt check the towel and one of the rocks got caught in the towel and i wiped my passenger side fender and made a Light Key like mark. Smh...... Ultimate Fail

Me second biggest fail came when I was replacing my rear rotors. Somehow I messed up my parking brake so I took it all apart convinced I could put it back together no problem. Long story short apparently I couldn't and got so frustrated in the process I forgot to put a block of wood between my pads on the caliper and hit the brakes. Cost me $85 for the tow and $150 for a caliper rebuild. I had to have my car that afternoon for work and didn't have the time to sit on Driver and figure out how to fix my mess.
the most messed up thing i did was giving my 240sx a jump start early in the morning and i put the right connections to the positive and negative on my car, but somehow when I went to put it on my 240, i put the opposite and went and sat in my 240 and tried to start it a couple times and noticed smoke and slowly walked out and saw that the plastic on the jumper cable was melting and decided to touch the grips which was burning hot and still stood there wondering what happened - then it clicked! oHH **** WRONG CONNECTION! and ran into my garage looking for something to pull the grip thingys off and the wires were all melted and it melted a nice groove into my 240's headlight and my bumper
I reached up into a storage shelf over my garage space for some Loctite, and hit a jar of used brake fluid I was going to take for disposal with my elbow. The brake fluid jar hit the top of my Lotus and shattered, pouring about half a gallon of brake fluid all over the car.
I managed to save it, by quickly hosing the car off (while in the garage), since I had the car up on jack stands, and couldn't push it out. I was in the middle of changing the oil pan, so the bottom of the engine was off.
Not a fun day. The mess in the garage was epic (broken glass, kitty litter to absorb brake fluid, then water), and the car needed some serious polishing and waxing afterwards, as the clearcoat did get dulled in the minute or so it took me to run for the hose.

At the moment Ive never really f**ked up anything in my car. But Ive done it to other cars LOL. By accident of course.
Few months ago I was helping my friend change out valve seals in his motor. (integra with a blown head gasket) I had no trouble taking the seal out but I shouldnt have listen to my other friend. In order to seat the seal correctly Im suppose to lightly hammer it in and listen for a change in sound that indicates it seating properly. This was my first time doing this (i know i know lol) so I listened to my friend. He said "harder man hit it harder it didnt go in yet". So I hit it harder and I smash the seal.
This was apparently the last new seal in the bag so we had to wait a day to get new ones. siiiigh.....
back in march my buddy and i decide to change my ac belt and drive train belt. I felt comfortable with his help since he fixes planes for a living otherwise i would have taken it to a shop(i have never worked on a car before this). Everything when well after we where done i started driving home and BAM i loss my power steering while driving at about 70 mph on the freeway. since i was far from home i continue to drive. i get home and i check my car and one of the pulleys was missing and the belts where hanging from some cables ...i was lucky that the pulley fell on the plastic under the engine with the screw. so what happen was that my friend forgot to tighten the screw on the pulley... always check the screws

Not with the G, but back in the day I had a full size Jeep Wagoneer (wood paneling included, oh yeah!) that I wanted to lift. I was a broke high school kid but had ***** enough to try and do it myself, how hard could it be? Got the truck jacked up on stands in front, wheels off and started trying to get things loosened up but it's amazing how stubborn (at that point) 14 year old bolts on an AMC vehicle can be...
In the process of prepping the Jeep, I neglected to put anything behind the rear wheels and managed to push the truck off the jackstands while using a bigass breaker bar on the front leaf springs.
Good news was that the force of the entire front end slamming down did loosen the bolt I was struggling with, but it also cracked the front pumpkin and caused some other issues.
Lesson learned - always secure the wheels!

A local guy (whom I'd never met in real life) on the Xterra forum I'm also on, wanted me to help him lift his Xterra after purchasing his brand new tires (note, the bold). So, he came over my house, shook hands and got started. We jacked up the back end, removed the leaf spring shackle, and in order to put the new (longer) lift shackle, you have to use a jack in between the leaf spring and frame to widen it out. I used the scissor jack from my truck. As I was raising it up, didn't realize that the threaded rod of the jack was driving into the side of his back tire. All of a sudden... PSHHHHHHH!
I replaced all my rubber hoses with silicon hoses back if February. 9 months later I finally got all my leaks fixed. I didn't know the silicone hoses require special clamps. I couldn't get a few of them tight without the hose squeezing thru the holes in the clamps.
Putting a set of coilovers on, I completely finished the front right before left, instead of loosening both strut bolts at the same time.
Needless to say, because the strut was slightly shorter than stock, when I tightened up the right size it changed the angle of the sway bar, so I could not get the remaining stock strut off.
Even an attempted banging did not free it. Stepped back to grab a drink and thought "**** these are probably shorter" held one up and my fail was realized.
This was all at about 3AM, after fixing a few other cars at the shop. Twas a good night.
