My first response would be no, but i've seen $9k G35s out there. Still I'd get him something cheaper to fix in the event of the wreck that will happen. No reason to let him drive a car he can wreck faster right? Keep it safe and cheap for the now. Plus our cars get horrible gas mileage he'll like the car but not the filling it up.

 

If you buy him a G, I'd say help him wash the car every week, change the oil with him...etc, if you do maintenance with him and he puts in work on fixing up his car he will be less likely to do stupid **** with it.

I got my G as a HS Graduation gift, I do all my maintenance and take care of my car. I love my car, you will never see doing stupid stuff. Racing and such I go to the Drag Strip or to an AutoX event.

Why not just get your son something practical, reliable, good on gas like a Corolla, Civic, Camry etc? I never understood buying kids nice cars...

If he wants to become a better driver, a clean, stock, S14 is reliable and offers the same if not better driving dynamics as a G Coupe....

 

It all depends on your kid and if you are comfortable with him/her driving something like a g35.

Could I have driven one at 17 yes of course. I drove a 25k truck for my first car, that I did not pay for, however I plowed snow with it for my father. So in a sense I guess I worked for it.

Would I have done some dumb stuff in a g35 at 17? Yes, I do at 21. I never did anything to outrageously stupid though, but i believe that is because I am who I am. I have worked since I was like 11 or 12 for my father and treat what I own or anyone else owns with care and respect.

You say hes a good driver, but is that on a FWD or RWD? if hes never driven a rwd, hes not a good driver.
First car, get him a civic. a 2006+ si would be sweet, and if he wants to mod that, a turbo or sc civic si can rape a stock g.

 

I don't see why not. I see kids everyday with cars far faster, nicer, more expensive, and higher maintenence than a G. To each their own. Anyone can own any car within their means. If you've got the money, that's your choice. Is he more likely to get tickets or wreck it? Maybe. I guess you could make the same argument that a kid that plays violent video games is more likely to murder someone though too.

 

Get him an economical reliable older car and have him finish growing up and leaning to drive. Give him the G as a reward for going to college or something similar. It will give him something to work towards and he will appreciate it more, just to name a couple reasons.

 

maybe you could find a good 240sx to learn on. It won't go too fast and give him time to get used to a standard and RWD.

 

Get him an inexpensive G without alot of mods, make him pay for insurance and/or payments. He wants the modded G because he wants to race or just to go fast. If he is paying for it he s
won't mod it as quickly and will take better care of it. That's prob the only thing that kept me alive in my Mustang 5.0. Was great fun though, only got a few tickets, I knew when not to speed for the most part .

Got my G going into senior year of HS (don't judge). Been about 3 years now and everything's good. No bad luck of ANY sort, haven't even been pulled over.

Then again that is ME. If you're kid is in the right mindset and appreciates what kind of gift you're giving him, then he should understand not to do stupid **** with it.

The G is definitely powerful enough to get into A LOT of trouble with, that's for sure.

 

17's too young IMO; or maybe I'm just jealous that I wasn't a spoiled brat and didn't buy my G until 24 Just kidding. I know most if you 17 yr olds bought the car with your own hard earned cash /sarcasm

Personally, I'd give him a $5000 allowance to play with and see what he chooses as his first car.
