coolant bypass for tb - should everyone do it?

i'm just wondering about the throttle body coolant bypass mod. i know it's used with the plenum spacer mod but, it seems to me that if you can prevent the coolant from warming the throttle body then it'll prevent the throttle body from heating the incoming air. why couldn't you delete the whole hose by closing off the openings of the coolant tube and tb?

what purpose does the coolant to tb hose serve? i've done alittle searching and only found the bit about blocking it with the spacer install. i've read the valve is opened during the winter in northern states. i live in the south and it never snows or gets too too cold here. can someone fill me in please and if this is a common mod done and i just haven't come across it i'm sorry. i did tried searching.

It's only purpose is to warm.thaw the TB in freezing climates. Other than that it is just robbing you of HP by heating up the intake air. I had that coolant line as well as a few others chopped off and welded shut.

^ just be warned...swapping out that rear pipe was one of the biggest PITA mods I have ever done.

I installed the bypass valve with MotorDynes spacer, living in SoCal I've never opened it.

just a thought, if you live in a warm climate yeah you can eliminate the line or shut the valve permanently. But if you ever plan to travel in freezing or near freezing temps its a good idea to have the valve so you can open it up.. I keep mine shut always but I have opened it on occasion when driving thru the mountains in freezing weather. The throttle body may freeze/have problems.. thats why coolant is required.

i didn't know there was a rear pipe. are you saying there's 2 inlets to the tb?

i'm sure i can pick up a valve from lowe's or autozone and just splice it into the coolant line and keep it closed if i don't wanna remove the hose completely. i don't see myself ever going somewhere that cold. whenever we go outta town it's to New Orleans, Destin, or Panama City and it doesn't freeze in those cities.

^ I was talking about the WHOLE coolant system. There is a cast-aluminum pipe that runs the coolant to the rear of the heads. One on the ends of the TB hose branch from there and the other end goes to a hard pipe on the driver's side of the block. Instead of just joining the two ends of the hose together, I just welded each fitting shut. At the same time, I also deleted all the fittings for the oil warmer, front crossover bypass, and rear bypass hoses. It is MUCH cleaner, saves weight, and gives you less chances for hose failure.

Does this mod only work if you have spacers?

Taking the piping off and welding the outlets shut sound really nice. I wish I could weld. I know it looks much better than a bunch of outlets nippled off.

I ended up getting a 1/4" valve and fittings to put in the hose so I can put it in and shut off. I got it from home depot. I didn't find a small valve in the plumbing section so I had a thought and checked in the air compressor section for a shut off valve I could use and they had the 1/4" valve and fittings to put in each end. I may install it later tonite or tomorrow. Not sure yet.

It's getting cooler out and I want to take full advantage of all the cool air. I'm hoping it lowers intake air temps significantly. I really don't think I've got anything to worry about down here in the south. The temps never go far below freezing here and my car is usually garage kept. I'll go ahead and change out my antifreeze so I know everythings going to be good. I'll definitely keep everyone posted on my results. I wish there was a way to measure the intake air temps with and without the hose delivering coolant.

ok so i decided that i'd go ahead and put the valve on tonite. it was simple after making sure the ends were tightened onto the valve thoroughly. just clipped the hose midway past the bend and test fitted it and realized it'd be better to take off about an inch of hose so that's what i did. after i clipped the hose i had to twist it back and forth to get it as far up the fitting as i could. i did the same with the other end. after making sure it was twisted in a way that was easily accessable i tightened hose clamps onto the ends of the hose. after i made sure everything was well i put the intake back on as well as the engine cover. DONE!

tomorrow i'll see if i notice anything different. i want to feel my intake plenum and see if it's as hot as normal. i'm sure it will be. just hoping i can feel the difference alittle. i'm sure my mental dyno will feel the HP increase knowing there's cooler air entering the engine
