It goes without say (or not, since I am saying it). If/when you paint the hats, make sure to mask off the part of the rotor that's shiny. You can probably do it on the car, but best results will be had if you remove the rotors completely off the car. Otherwise you'll have overspray on areas that you don't want paint on (such as the lug studs).

i see what your saying...im going to put tape over the lug studs and tape off as much as i can of the shiny part...if some over spray does get on the shiny part, it will come off with the use of the brakes.

I disagree. I think denny should buy some all carbon/ceramic brake parts. That'll solve the rusting issue..........then again I wonder what denny does with the suspension on his car and other stuff that is rusting/corroding....................DOMO

Next thread: "Why do I have black dots all over my car?"

I'd take the rotors off before painting them if I were you.

Ok, you see the black part there? That is the Hat. If it's not black or Zinc coated (and most are NOT) then it will ALWAYS rust. Why you ask? Because nothing touches it to rub the rust off. You see the silver area where the red caliper touches? If that area rusts, the rust wil come off after a quick drive around the block. Why you ask? Because the friction from the break pads rubs off the rust. If you have driled and slotted rotors then the inside of the drill holes and slots are likely going to rust as well, because the pads don't make contact with those areas and so rust can sit inside these crevices.

The folks telling you to paint your rotors are telling you to paint the rusted Hat on yours so that it looks black like in the picture. End. Of. Story.

And although I still have a hard time believeing folks don't know how to post pictures online... Go to this site...

Rear rotors rusted no more!!!

BEFORE:

DIY: I got some 3M 320 grit sand paper and sanded as much rust as I could off. Filled up a spray bottle with warm water and used a steel wool to get an excess rust off. Used brake part cleaner to give it a final cleaning...I then prepped the area with 3m blue painters tape and used VHT high temp Caliper paint. Here are the results.

AFTER:

I want to the the front rotors too even though they were not nearly as bad as the rear. And my Calipers look really old and worn out. I dont have the money to upgrade to BBK, so im thinking of painting my calipers (while still on the car) either black or silver. My only issue with painting the Calipers is the prepping with the tape. There are a few spots on the stock Calipers that Im not sure if it is supposed to be painted or not.
