Exhaust Tips on the G37S Sedan
You know what, Tuner? I'll not likely be acting on this in any immediate future, so you can eye-ball the situation in person come springtime. In the meantime, it's all just research where most all discussion and constructive opinions are welcome.
You know me... I never make a quick decision when it comes to the car.

Replacing exhaust tips is so easy, why does it require a thread? Any muffler shop in any town across the world carries tips. You could spend major $$ on MotorDynes tips or Google exhaust tips for more styles/variations, but it comes down to what you like....just do it!

there is the link for the invidia tips that are SS. But IDK if invidia sells the tips seperately?

IMO it just looks ricey, they're way too big.
And yes Rochester, you're right, having a peek in person would be best.
To Gary C, I agree with your statement, but at the same time, you don't know Rochester, this guy is meticulous and plans every little detail out to the last second. Just going to the local exhaust shop and popping some tips on is NOT an option for this guy.
I think he's looking for VEHICLE specific advice on which tips suit the car best, with perhaps some pictures to back it up. While this may not be the average scope of threads on Driver, it certainly does serve a purpose to show the many integral options in every little modification, which also adds to the uniqueness everyone can bring ot the table, rather than jumping on the bandwagon. It's a minor detail to most but those minor little details make the difference between a cleanly modded car, and a car with a bunch of parts on it.

Hmm. I wonder if the 2010+ rear bumper redesign masks that?
Speaking of the rear-bumper, and a little off-topic, but I much prefer the previous bumper design, which allowed for better custom paint like this picture here. This is beautiful! I was planning on that mod for the longest time, but then this 2011 fell in my lap and plans changed.
^Agreed, that looks waaay better than the 2011 version. Considering the bumper cutout is a large contributor to the appearance, as is the bumpers profile especially from the side I think it's OT.
Are you actually thinking of changing the bumper? I bet someone with a 2010 would be willing to swap, I'm sure the opinion on which is nicer goes both ways, as they both have appeal.
And most people like to 'upgrade'.

Plus, I've got back-up sensors in my bumper, which complicates things.
But if I ever get rear-ended and need to replace the bumper, the idea would race to the top for sure.
My mechanic wanted to see the G, so I swung by the shop yesterday. While there, we talked about the exhaust tips. He was saying the length and inlet sizes were pretty much irrelevant, because he can cut the tip to length, and weld anything on the face of the muffler. So I was thinking of a pair of these Magnaflow tips.
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...e=main&id=9653
They're 3" round, 30 degree slash cut, with a beveled edge to a double-wall. At 9.5" length, about 2" would have to get cut off the back. Not sure how well that would work out considering the reduction at the collar. I should probably show him this pic and see what he thinks. Not cheap, though, at $78 each.
A single-wall tip would run about half that much, at $30 - $40 each, and with diameter options in both 3" or 3.5". And with a 45 degree slash cut, which I think might look better. More simple.
It's funny, though, because it would be buying an 18" tip primarily sold to pick-up trucks, then cutting 2/3 length off the mounting side.

The OEM tip is oval, 4.5" x 3.5". And it looks like a 30 degree angle cut with a rolled edge (and seam). The tip is angled downward about 10 degrees, and about 4" long, where it's clamped to the actual 2.25" exhaust tip.
I think a single-wall, 3.5" round, with a 45 degree cut and straight edge would look a lot better. Fitted closer to the bumper, and angled parallel to the ground, rather than slightly downward. And particularly if the tip went all the way back to the OEM muffler... which is about 7.5". From the profile, you would see the bottom inch of the pipe, as well as an inch or so of the extension, which would follow the lines of the bumper almost perfectly at the same 45 degree angle.
The real skill would come by way of cutting the back-end to fit flush on the muffler face. The face isn't flat, it's rounded. Hmm.
Magnaflow makes a $35 truck tip which fits the bill. It specs out exactly perfect, but with a silly 18" length. (Truck) Heck, at that price, I could buy 3, so that the first one could be used for practice.

And I like the way you're going at this, I'm going to stay subscribed.
I'm not sure why you think this Rochester, but cutting the tip at 90* is a simple thing to do there is no need for "practise" unless your mechanic is incompetent, which is certainly not the impression I got. So rest easy on that portion, you only need 2 tips

Anyway, when it comes, I'll certainly swing back around to this thread. It probably won't happen for a few months. It's getting really annoying looking at the OEM tips, and now that I'm thinking about alternatives, it becomes just that more obvious. So far the only person who sympathizes with that assessment is my mechanic. If he didn't agree, he'd likely mock me into embarrassed admission on something ricey. This doesn't feel ricey, though. Just a reasonable design tweak.
I need to print out some pictures and parts specs, then get back with the shop on more focused plans.
OAN note, I was at the AutoShow today, looking at $80k Mercs with crappy, clamp-on exhaust tips. Go figure.
