Bel, Escort, and Valentine are, in my opinion, the best three. Personally, I went with Valentine.

I never figured out a fully hidden solution, but it is hardwired with a concealed display in the ashtray, so there's no hanging wires. The unit is attached at the top edge of the windshield, to the right of the rearview mirror, just below the headliner. You can't see it through the windshield because of the dark strip at the top, and you have to get your eyes below the headliner to see it from the windows, even then, only from the right. It's the best solution I could find.

Since moving to MD, I don't think anybody actually goes the "speed limit" except grandma.

I'm guess in needs to be stealth b/c you live in VA or someplace where radar detectors are illegal. That said, I've seen some stealth installs of the Valentine1 where someone put the remote display inside the rearview mirror. As in behind the glass so you only saw it when the LEDs lit up.

 

I see the whole "drive the speed limit" argument and while it is what it is- people who want to drive responsibly on the fringe (15-20kph over) are in an envelope where the police can be quite inconsistent with enforcement ie: you're going to get a ticket or they'll brush it off. Sometimes their "LINE" is 15 over... sometimes 17. Today it might be 18.

In SOME cases you may get a warning to slow down or, when he gets to the window he won't like your face and may ALSO give you a ticket for the tint.

Now then- "on the fringe" is a bit different when you're doing 20 over in a playground zone- so let's instead look at the fringe as a percentage... 20% over in a 30 zone is only 36 instead of 50... Now we're starting to look a bit more responsible and 6kph over is barely even readable on many speedos.

I don't advocate speeding- but I do completely accept that people are going to drive "on the fringe." These are typically the people who are the most in need of the detectors- if you ask me. These are the folks driving generally with the flow of traffic- the a55hats who are driving ***** out everywhere deserve the tickets and people who drive the speed limit everywhere don't speed anyway so who cares.

I got the Bel STiR Plus remote device and have been quite happy with it. It's discrete yet effective enough to give you some awareness of what's going on around you. It also gives you the ability to anticipate drivers in your immediate area and increase your level of caution.

For example: Driving along in amongst traffic and you get a warning of a nearby Ka band radar- frequently mobile patrol car devices. Reflexively you may make a note that someone around you (if you're driving 15-20 over as many people do) may do some aggressive braking when they stumble on the PC. In addition, the STiR also broadcasts traffic advisory messages if your area supports that initiative, advises you of traffic camera locations (updated almost weekly), and also has GPS functionality so if you're constantly getting false returns in an area of high K / X band notifications you can lock the signals out. In addition if you silence the same location 3 times it automatically locks it out.

I had the remote and LED display tucked into my ashtray- so if I do get pulled over I can kind of hide it out of view. Most will agree that when a law-man sees the detector if he was GOING to give you a warning, you'll quite often just get the ticket out of principle.

I saw the thread about the remote tucked into the rearview mirror- that was SLICK!

I have my Passport Qi45 mounted behind my grille and it works great. Even if you look straight into the grille you can only see it if you're looking for it.

I don't have the Laser shifter (extra $200) but I'm golden on radar signals. Keep in mind the shifter is not a "scrambler" and it doesn't send a faulty read. It just blocks the laser lock for a couple seconds so you have a chance to slow down before your speed is recorded.

 

You want something to send back a false reading??? How are you planning on doing that using radar waves???

 

You can make all the excuses in the world for driving over the speed limit but consider how late you'll be if you get pulled over for speeding, and then there's the fine....is it worth it?

I think theres two kind of speeding. Reckless speeding where you are being ridiculous just cause you feel like it and making driving dangerous for all the other cars on the road. Then theres regular speeding where you are simply going faster than the law wants you to go. I do the second type regularly and my detector helps me do it at a much lower risk of penalty.

 

I drive above the speed limit but I also have a detector. It's a Cobra but it has saved me on numerous occasions. Looking at a Escort 8500 or Bel 955 now. If you are going to drive the speed limit please obey the other laws of the land that says Merge with the speed of traffic and also the number 1 lane (as we refer to as the fast lane) is officially called the Passing lane, it's meant for cars that are going to drive faster than the speed limit to pass those that are not, not for those who will drive the speed limit or less to slow down others as I so often see.

I bought a cheap little cobra. Way I see it, It'll still see the cop before me, and I can focus less on looking for cops and more attention on the road . I have to say I used mine more for finding the cop before he saw my front window tint haha.

 

Amen brother. (IMO) The cars that drive at or below the limit in the passing lanes have a greater negative effect on traffic than a speeder does. The slow mover inevitably leads to an angry speeder passing on the right and likely speeding more to make up for the perceived time loss stuck behind Morgan Freeman and Ms Daisy. If you just let speeders move along in the fast lane then theres no need (or want) to make risky passing maneuvers in traffic.

Moral of the story: Ticket sloths in the passing lane just the same as the speeders
