sorry for misleading heading. This is the first new thread I have started and I did not think it would allow me to post so I was testing waters. I do not know how to edit the heading title.

Further more to the question;
I have an 07 auto G35 with 110,000 run fully synthetic and on early startup wether cold or not I ahve a quick chatter almost sounding like a lifter chatter. It is there for maybe 2 seconds and goes away is this normal?

 

hmm..judging from past lifter troubles, maybe the lifters aren't holding oil. maybe the oil drains from the lifters while parked awhile and when you start up it takes a sec for the lifters to fill with oil again. i don't know if the lifters on our cars are the same as other vehicles but, that's just my guess.

 

Thats what I was thinking. Was just curious if any one else experiences a similar noise at this or some relevant mileage.

Are you sure it's lifter noise and not your ABS waking up? It makes the exact same noise as lifters and only lasts a second. Had me worried too until I realized what it was....Gary

 

I had to replace 3 or 4 lifters on my car.
If it goes away then I would doubt it is the lifters, it would be constantly there if it was lifter issues.

 

Any details as to what is involved in changing the lifters. Did you do it yourself? If not, what was the charge?

There's 10+ hours of labour involved.
I ended up paying around $2k to a shop that specializes in engine repair.

Might seem like a lot, but the infiniti dealership quoted me $3.4k for the same repair.

I did this about 6 months ago and the car has been running fine since then
the lifter noise was a little embarassing and so annoying

 

lifters...hmmmm where are the lifters on this vq motor you speak of...is it like a unicorn and mythical.....

 

I just had top end completely rebuilt on 06 G35 and I still have start up "chatter" that sounds just like this fellow describes. It is annoying but only happens on cold starts or after car has sat for more than two hours. I have heard so many different ideas from timing chain being dry, to lifters, to blah blah blah. I put in oil filter with back flow prevent and still same noise. I guess I am going to take it back to the extremely expensive shop that raked me over the coals on this rebuild and have them figure it out.
Evidently this is something other G35 drivers have experienced but it seems many on this site attribute it to different things.

Would this issue throw a code?

 

Never heard of anyone getting a code at least I have not. Does not do it every time but for sure enough times to be aggravating. Car Doctor here in Houston says his wife's G35 did same thing but his was a oil filter that had no back flow prevent on it and it was basically a dry start issue. I don't think that is my issue I'm just thinking after spending 4K it should not be sounding this way. Sometimes I don't like this G35 but my mom has 03 model and has never had even a glitch out of hers. Oh well.
