Hi there. I did some looking on the forum, but could not find a post similar to my problem. It started since I bought brand new tires a couple weeks ago.

I bought a 04 coupe on OEM 19s last year with tires with %40 tread left. I could take corners at a decent speed. Just recently I bought brand new potenza tires (245/40/19, 225/40/19). And now whenever I take a tight corner and press the suspension harder on one side and have the wheels turned, I hear a terrible rubbing sound in my wheel well. It sounds like the tires are rubbing against something and I dont know what. I looked and cant see anything. I can also feel this and if affects the cornering of this car now.

I cant tell if maybe a previous owner had the car slightly lowered and with the new tires theres not enough clearance? Also I have OEM 19s on a 2004 coupe and I am not sure if that was even a option for that year so maybe its not spec rims for my car, or did I need 225/35/ not 40? I have no idea what this is or what I can do and its upsetting me. So any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

so you don't know if you are lowered at all?? go outside....look at your rears and see if there is different colored springs or struts....and if so that means your lowered....how much fender gap do you have front and rear??

 

I never thought of the car being lowered as a factor till the other day when someone looked and suggested it. But the coil springs and struts are no color and look stock. I have 1-3/4'' from the top of the tire to the start of the outside wheel well. I need to get this problem fixed before I go on a large road trip next month. Thank you for the advice.

 

well that gap seems alot smaller than what stock is so somehow you are lowered....

 

Can you post up a photo of your car so we can tell if it's lowered or not. I assume that the wheels don't have spacers installed behind them.

Closer pix please. I am just going to ask, did you get your fenders rolled yet?

 

That looks like stock height. I doubt the rear tires are rubbing anything. You should be able to see marks in the wheel wells if the tires are hitting something. Is there any paint rubbed off on the front fenders?

 

Is the fender well shroud loose anywhere? Did it come off?

When you say that it effecgs cornering, do you mean that the tire stops turning when it hits the rubbing? Or it's in your head?

If the tire is hitting the fender shroud, cornering won't be impacted, it's just a plastic covering, relatively flimsy i think.

The only thing I can think of is if the older tires were similar to my old Nankangs and ran small and the Potenzas ran true or fuller.

Can you describe the sound? Might be a bearing going bad as well?

 

With those '06 coupe wheels and the tire size you're running nothing should rub! Check inside your wheel wells for anything that's not screwed down/loose. Also check the endlinks on your sways. How many miles on your G and does it appear you have OE shocks? OE shock life is about 80K miles, less if lowered. Could be excessive body lean due to any of the previous items mentioned....

Im with Gary on this one. Those tire sizes should not be rubbing and ur car doesnt appear to be lowered... My only guess on this one would be worn shocks

 

I rubbed on those sizes but I had a good 2.5"+ drop on mine. And I had 245/40's. Check for a tear in the fender liner too. Sometimes you kick something up from the ground and tears the fender liner and that runs on the wheels some. But agreed with above posts check endlinks on the sways. If you are dropped there is a good chance your endlinks might have come off.

 

check the fender liner if it is loos or sagging down.

Check if there is anything in between the wheels and the fender lining. like a loose can or cup ??

Why dont you remove the wheels and inspect everything..

 

Nothing looks to be worn down from rubbing underneath. My car has 100k miles on it now. And I am not sure if the shocks have been ever changed. That is sounding like a real good diagnostic. Here is a quick video I made of the sound.
