Oil Consumption dilemma

I know there are many threads on this issue, and i have read them. I just want to get some feedback.

I recently purchased an '05 G35 coupe MT with 60K miles on it from a private seller about 6 months ago. when I did my first oil change on the car, i noticed only a quart and a half drained, but i figured that maybe the guy before me didnt fill it all the way. so i put 5 quarts of royal purple in

So 3600 miles later, I did my oil change again this monring, and I got barely a quart. I did monitor my oil dipstick in between changes and and it read ok a few weeks ago. For the past week and a half i have noticed a noise coming from the engine. and just recently, the 'check engine' light came on too.

After I did the oil change today, I drove the car and did not hear the noise anymore, but the check engine light remains on.

Needless to say, i have OC. But the thing is, i have no warranty. I spent all day today calling Infiniti and dealerships, and basically they are all telling me there is nothing they can do. They said a new engine will run about $10K. Obviously i dont have that money.

So what are my options here? I can either buy a used engine and pray that it doesnt have the same problem and pay somebody to install it...which will run between $3-$5K.

besides the price, Wwhat is the downside to just putting in oil when its low? because im thinking that is my only other option. IM not going to get anything if i trade it in...and im not going to sell to a private buyer and stick somebody wlth with this...thats not right.

Basically, im screwed.

If you did monitor your dipstick then you shouldn't of barely gotten a quart.

Switch to Conventional such as GTX 5W30 since you are burning no reason to burn the expensive stuff. Also get the code read, just because the engine lights on doesn't mean its oil related. Go to advance auto or Autozone they can read it for free. The code most likely needs to be cleared before it goes off.

If you check your oil weekly you should not be dropping low, if you drive 1000 miles a week then check it more frequently.

Before you turn the engine on in the AM check the oil level cold. The dipstick is retarded I bet you are getting false readings if the dipstick has been reading fine.

Now I will monitor my oil every 5 days...the crazy thing is, my oil light never came on.

so basically, for as long as I have this car, I will pretty much be putting oil in every 2 weeks or so

^ Thats a good thing, if the oil light comes on the engine is DONE. Check it cold you will get accurate readings immediately.

Switch to conventional, after a few changes it might slow down a lot.

i dont know if he was having the OC problem I was having...but even if he was, he's not going to admit it to me now.

Check out IPP or Cosworth. They sell brand new engines in that 3-5K range. If you don't have an extended warranty... Stay the F away from the stealership, they will bleed you dry. Find a reputable Nissan/Infiniti mechanic in your area and work with them. When I developed OC with my G at 80K miles I found a used engine with roughly 30K miles for 2100 bucks. Had it installed at Hill's Garage in MD for 1100. Had I known about IPP then I wld have gotten a built engine new. Hindsight aye... Just do your best to maintain it, its a pain in the **** but a lot of ppl live with it. Good luck.

@azumaster

thanks a lot...I dont know what IPP is....but ot be honest, I dont think I can afford another 4 K to get a new engine installed in my car. I dont have 4 K.

I will do my best to keep checking oil level and topping off as neccessary, because honesly, that is really all i can do right now.

another poster on here recommended not using RP anymore and using GTX oil, so i will try that, i have nothing to lose there. It really just sucks though. people who spend this money and these types of cars shold not have to deal with these kind of problems.

I lucked out and got a engine replaced under warranty, 06 Sedan 6mt. In your case id get rid of it STAT, trade it in is your best bet. Im sure the original owner of my car traded it in cause OC issues.

Throw a can of restore in that thing. OC is caused by oil getting passed the rings during downshifting (according to the guy at Infiniti)

I believe my car may be consuming oil also. Though I can't be 100% sure just yet. I've heard of people buying these "high mileage warranties." Do they actually cover anything? Not sure if they are just scams. I've heard of them in commercials myself but they come across as a HUGE. SCAM.

Anyone have any experience?

For reference my car has 105k miles. 2005 6M G35 Coupe.
