Dip stick reading range between L and H

Does anyone know approximately how many litres of oil is accounted for by the L - H area on the dip stick? Eg. If your motor's oil level has dropped from H all the way down to L, roughly how much oil has been consumed? I know I could probably figure it out through trial and error topping it up. But is there a specification for this somewhere?

I did a search and couldn't find an answer. I have a 2003 and also checked the service manual. Unless I missed it, I couldn't find anything more than it saying to make sure the oil level is between H and L.

The only thing I found was the guy in the second post saying that from the bottom of the dip stick to the H is about 0.75 litres:

On my previous 06 G35 6 sp the oil level on the L mark on the dipstick it took two quarts.
1/2 way between H & L took one quart. That was usually when I added a qt.
It sometimes used a qt/1000 miles
Check your oil weekly after the vehicle has been sitting overnight on level ground

Most threads I found said it was 1 quart or 1 litre - thats from various threads here and 350z threads.
There was a mention of a "2 quart L-H" dipstick.
Some people said this was to try and hide the oil burning issue by making the engines appear as though they go from H to L slowly.

I'm with Brad here, telco you know I respect your opinion and help on this forum but everything I've read over the years tells me it's a 1 quart difference.

Can confirm this, on an 06 6MT at least. Took 2 quarts the one time it ever got to the L level. After some trial an error, it takes a good 1/2 quart to top off from 1/4 down from the H level.

My method was check on Saturday after car sat over night, added oil, started car to cycle oil, then checked it again on Sunday (didn't drive car to eliminate chance of burning oil and throwing off test results). Took a few weekends to figure out exactly how much to add.

My car is burning oil, so I check it once a week and add 1/2 a quart whenever it shows 1/4 low on the dipstick.

I concur. My dipstick was about 3/4 of the way to F and it took me about 5/8th of a qt.

I did the oil consumption test with my previous 06 G35 and monitored my oil usage very carefully.

My engine oil usage never qualified me for a replacement engine and traded it in at 171796 miles. I added oil whenever necessary.

One nice feature of my 2012 G37S is a superior dipstick

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So I bought the car in September and checked the oil every day after work. It took a few days to get used to the dip stick. lol It was down to ~2/3 to 3/4 to H after I bought it. I got the oil changed about two weeks later. I checked it soon after that a few times and it was near full, I think.

It's been 3300 km/~2000 miles since and has been holding steady at 3/4 between L and H. I'll keep watching weekly and before I do for the next oil change top it up and see how much it takes, just for the heck of it.

Fun car so far.

I'll prob add one more to the 1QT between L and H.

My car was a heavy burner, so I had to constantly pull the dipstick, and was measuring how much oil I pulled out of the engine and put in.

With a fresh 5 qt's, the dipstick read right at H or even slightly higher. I'd measure it maybe 1/2 hr after doing the oil change, and assume some old oil remained in the engine after the change.

When I checked it, I'd add 1 QT right at the L and that would bring it back up the H. Maybe a tiny bit below it.

When I do an oil change, if it was at the L, I'd drain it out, and then pour it back into the bottle and get a little less than 4 qts. I'd have some oil remain in the oil pan, and I'm sure not all came out of the engine.

So at least for my 5AT setup, it was ~1 QT between L and H.

For what it's worth. I've owned both an 03 coupe and an 05 revup coupe, both manual, both also had dipstick with 1 qt from L to H... just my experience

Did your revup coupe consume excess oil?

IF your talking about mine (2005 Sedan), it now uses about 1/2 quart between changes (7500 miles) with 147,000 on the clock.
