Gas tank problems? Geez!

Ok here's a weird one guys. It started at around 3000 miles. The problem occurs randomly when I am filling up at differant gas stations through out So. Cal. Basically I take the car in usually at around 1/8 of a tank or about 300 miles on the trip odometer. But the issue can occur even when I have a 3/4 or 1/2 tank. The problem is that I can't fill the tank without the auto-shut-off on the pump engaging. You know when you are filling up and as the tank reaches its limit the shut off valve or whatever engages just before the tank is topped off. I am not a bone head here guys, yes the tank is empty. I should be able to get at least 16-17 gallons in it when it's that empty. But the auto-shutoff-valve clicks after only 10 gallons. I have tried several differant gas stations and the problem doesn't always happen at the same station so I know it's not that. Help, this is really annoying as sometimes I can only fill half or so of my tank. Anyone else had anything like this happen? Thanks for the suggestions. Peace.

Re: Gas tank problems? Geez!

This is an old issue brought up since last summer. There seems to be a consistent problem, but usually reported at COSTCO gas stations. It may be the design of the nozzle that they use and the vent/sensor/pressure design. It may be that the other gas stations are sourcing their nozzles from the same place as COSTCO was. Anyway, some report that it sometimes helps to reposition the nozzle and/or pull it back a bit when you're filling.

That's funny cuz' one of the stations I have tried and use frequently is the COSTCO station around the corner from work. HMMM.... Ok I'll try to pull the nozzle out alittle but I think I already tried that. This sux! Costco has the cheapest gas around here to. = (

when i fill up my car, i do not squeez the trigger all of the way just about half way and i fit more gas in it before the pump shuts off. i think it is from the fumes but i also think it is in my head, but i feel better!

Try backing-off the clip on the pump handle a notch to slow down the flow rate. This should help. Also, I forget exactly what the reason is (maybe something to do with a charcoal filter in the tank getting wet), but it's not a good idea to try to pump every last drop.

Re: Gas tank problems? Geez!

Growler here guys. Since posting on this type of incident has been reasonably frequent, I have been watching out for this difficulty when I fill up. So far at 2800 miles I have not had that issue. I top off every tank until I hear the "gurgle"...you know what I mean. What I have been doing is refueling at about 1/2 tank or 1/4 tank.....I have yet to pump from the bottom of the tank............this issue may have to do with venting, I don't really know...some pump handles and nozzles with those convoluted rubber boots could aggravate the problem but I have not experienced it yet.....Perhaps it's time for one of our forum posters...poll savy, to work up a poll. mabey we can identify a trend or a unique condition in fill up causing this. Just a suggestion.

Re: Gas tank problems? Geez!

you see what I noticed noone else here mentioned was that there may be something in there.

I may be way off but...

its intermittent, whether 1/2 or 3/4 or empty... imagine a ping pong ball in there .. sometimes it gets up the neck of the tank and sometimes not... engaging the shutoff.

I dunno ...possibly if someone got in your tank door.

I dunno man.
weird.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll try them out. I'm also gonna have the dealer look at it next week when they are replacing the squeeky rear brakes. I'm sure they won't be able to find the problem of course when it's there but we'll see. Thanks.

Re: Gas tank problems? Geez!

I haven't had any problems with ARCO or Costco gas. I have saved up my receipts and marked mileage on them.. at some point I'll get around to taking a look at mpg v. brand.

Even if there is a mileage drop with the "cheaper" gas, it depends on how much cheaper it is. Some days it's only a penny or two, so you might as well stick with Mobil or Chevron. Some days it's 10 or 15 cents a gallon less, which more than makes up for slight losses in the mpg arena.

Gas is gas there really isnt a difference between brands, now 76 in California no longer uses MTBE and Chevron has the Techron but Arco will not hurt your car and it is much nicer on my pocket book espically when 91 octain costs around $2.00 a gallon

Re: Gas tank problems? Geez!

yeah Redrok8....I started to have that same problem this weekend. (its monday right now)....happened sunday night. I was filling at the local chevron station and after 3 gallons,...shut off. I had less than 1/2 tank of gas. Just kept tapping the gas until I had 20 bucks....took a while. It also happened last week a the same gas station. Had less than 1/2 tank. Went to fill,...only put 12 bucks! When I got home, did not even fill up. I think its the pump itself. Went crusing with my friends and filled up in another area. The tank was 1/4, filled it up to the top. No problems, not short stopping. I have only 2200 miles on my car. Will check with them when I bring in for servicing.

G35 Gas Tank Filling Problem

I have a 2003 G35 and have had problems filling the gas tank since the day that I bought the car. In the first year the gas tank was replaced and that still did not correct the problem. I pretty much gave up on the dealer being able to correct the problem but got tired of always over filling the tank (watching gas pour out on the ground) or just never filling the tank to full. I brought it back up to the dealer just recently and they replaced the gas tank sending unit this time. IT FIXED THE PROBLEM! I can finally fill the car without the pumping shuting off!

I have a 2004 6MT and I've only had this problem just recently, I have 25K miles. I filled up 2 days ago, and I couldn't get the pump to stay open at all! It would just shut off every time I squeeze the handle. It took forever to fill my tank. I even switched to a different pump halfway through. Very annoying. I go to that Chevron gas station all the time, as it's on my way home from work. If it does it again, I'll take it in to the dealer.. perhaps they can fix my cd player too.

Yes, fuel fill issues are well documented on our G's...and there's another issue you didn't mention: At the bottom of the filler neck is a flap that prevents fuel from splashing back up the neck. That flap can malfunction and also prevent fuel from entering the tank.

The dealer will also fix your cd player.
