Smile aftermarket sub with factory head unit. Is it possible?

Just got my 2006 6MT and was wondering if there are the right outputs on the rear of the head unit for an aftermarket sub/amp? I assume there is, but I wanted to check. Thanks in advance.

There is. Atleast there was on my 04, I had a JL 500/1 Amp with 2 12" Alpine type-R subs, and a monster cable power cap. I also know a lot of 05 owners with systems. Its totally possble. Good Luck

I'd like to know also, for my '05.

Looks like I'm off to the searches!

yes you can

I have a 05 G35 Coupe and I currently have a sub and amp setup with my stock radio. This meaning completely stock, in which i dont even have premium package. Iam running a JL 500/1 amp with JL Audio Subwoofer enclosed in a 4080 box (SideNote: excellent quality box that sounds and looks great). The amp and sub sound perfectly good with my stock radio. Although, for a fact it would sound much better if i had an aftermarket head unit, but i wanted to keep the stock look.

Good Luck on your setup.

It's very easy.
*cliffnotes version*
Disconnect the leads going to the rear 6x9's, tap this feed for your sub amp.

Unless they added something in 06, the factory HU does not have RCA outputs for an aftermarket amp. Thus, you must use a hi-to-low converter to convert speaker input to RCA input. What you can do (this is what I did) is take the input from the factory amp in the trunk and tap the leads right there. It's not too hard.

take it to any stereo shop that knows that they are doing and it will be no problem. if you don't change out the head unit the bass will drown out the highs

game over installations does all my customer's work and my custom set up in my own personal vehicles. you need a hi-lo convertor and just a proper installation and it works fine. i get a seperate output switch so i can turn the sub on and off manually seperate from the factory head unit. works and sounds great adding an aftermarket sub/amp in the trunk.

Hey flip714,

For your nonbose set up, can you tell me if you had an external amp in the back of the trunk, or if the speakers are powered straight from the HU? Also, where did you tap your signal wires into? I've also got a non-premium system and most of the audio mod posts for this board have been for the bose set up. Thanks

I have a non-premium package as well, due to the fact that I dont have enough headroom with the sunroof.

My understanding is that the stereo is identical minus two speakers, including the subwoofer. I would think that I should be able to install an amp+woofer without much problem considering that facility exists on the premium package.

Anyone have a suggestion about what might be the easiest path for a 10" sub?

Brian
