Installed Component Speakers

spent about an hour last night and another hour tonight installing a new set of Polk Audio db 6500 Components in my doors. after hearing these speakers in Ducatiguy's car and also in coupin827's... and considering that they were only $130 brand new shipped from eBay, i figured what the hell...

rather than ripping the guts out of the Bose speakers and using them as spacers, i fabricated a pair of MDF rings to allow the Polk woofers to mount right up to the stock holes from the Bose speaker (the rings are ugly since i didn't have a router but they worked perfectly and are hidden by the door panels, so who cares). the tweeters mounted right into the stock locations with the stock bracket.

i think i could do this again in about an hour and 15 mins if i had to do it again... alot of time spent deciding how i wanted to do it and figuring out what blade for my jigsaw worked best on 3/4" MDF, measuring 3-4 times, plus the fading daylight, etc.

anyways, on to the pics.... sorry didn't take a pic of the tweeter, but mounting it was common sense and only took like 2 mins per side. i'm going to take the doors apart again sometime this week to apply more dynamat and also to trim and clean up the wires

Very nicely done. May I ask what you used to mount the crossover. I also installed the same components a few weeks back. Sounds great.

How is the sound improvement over the bose? What kind of headunit and amp are you running?

Niiice...did you use the stock speaker as a template for the MDF ring? I need to fabricate a mounting bracket for a set of 5.25" Focals I bought off a buddy.

- crossover has 2 holes inside for mounting... i just used a pair of sheet metal screws... i found a spot that didn't interfere wih the door panel and that didn't have anything behind it (like the window, etc). i also put a piece of Accumat (Scosche brand "dynamat") behind the crossover to be extra certain there was not any rattles, etc.

- right now i am still running with the stock Bose amplifier... when i finally change that out, the sound will improve even more. even with the Bose amp, there is still an improvement in the sound for sure

- to make those rings... first i traced out the outline of the stock Bose speaker for the outside of the ring, then i used the gasket that came with the Polk woofer to trace out the inside of the ring. i made the cuts with a drill and a jigsaw, then used a countersink bit to rout out the holes for the stock screws (because the mounting tabs on the bose speaker are only 1/4" thick or so, not 3/4" like the spacer)... PM me if you have any other Q's

Lol. Yeah everyone has caught the mod bug. It helps to be handy so you can save a few $$$, and then go buy more mods.

Would love to buy a set of mounting rings from you for the exact same speakers. Email me at mrcscomics@comcast.net if you could sell a set to me.
Best,
Chris
