Autobahn!! FUN!! :)
Ok...
This is loooooong overdue. I finally got off my ***, and got the pix off my camera. Was in Germany a couple of weeks ago, and had a weekend free in Germany to do whatever I wanted to.
So... off to Berlin I went on the Autobahn with my VW Touran TDI (Turbo Diesel Injection... whoooooo! Let's see how fast it can go!!)
Summary of Drive on Autohahn:
CONS: Sad to say... car tops out ~ 190km/hr (~115-120mph). Will upgrade to faster car next time.
PROS: It feels GREAT to be in 6th gear, flooring it... and get blown by on the left by some BMW or Porcsche or Mercedes. Oh, and seeing that circle with a dash in it... it's part of the variable speed limit signs they have on the autobahn. If there's that sign up, it means BONZAI!!! No holds barred.
I tried taking a pix of a BMW flying by me probably around 250km/hr (If you see a car flying up your a$$ in the rear view, when you're in 6th gear, flooring it... move to the right is the German Rule of driving.)
Nice to see that there are courteous drivers in this world and know how to drive.

NICE!!!
Question: I thought they require a special permit/license to drive on the bahn... am I wrong?
Yeah, I heard you can actually get a ticket over there for that (not moving over to the slower lane). Too bad they don't enforce that law here... could have made driving here a much more pleasant experience. IMO, American drivers have a lot to learn from the Europeans...

As far as getting a German Driver's License... it's EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!!! Some of my co-workers (guys with Ph.D's) failed the German written part of the test several times. It's no easy task to get a license over there.
If you actually have a driver's license over there, it means that you actually KNOW how to drive. Courteous drivers, people don't honk at you, and people respect each other and the roads.
The "Law" over there is:
1) DRIVE on the right!!! (interesting concept we should adapt here)
2) Pass on the left!! (another great idea... At no point over the weekend did I have to tailgate anyone for more than 3 seconds. Everyone moved OUT of the way)
It's all a great concept with good drivers on the road... but here in the U.S.... we hand out driver's license to anyone that can look over the hood.
Best part... over the course of 1200km I put on the car, I did NOT encounter a SINGLE pothole... nice, smooth, maintained roads over there...

It's costs about $2k to ship it over there... and another $2k to ship it back..
For that price, I'd rather spend it renting some fast German car that I can abuse under company insurance.
I'm planning on going to Munich next time to check out the Bavarian MotorWerks Museum (BMW)... It'll be a nice drive on the Autobahn. lol
