Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.

Wrong - The service bulletin says to remove the panel trim under the shifter and radio (above the console) and clamp the shifter rod with a vise grip before attempting to remove the shift ****. I have been under there when I replaced my console. I know all the wires under there, and none affect the air bags.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
I just had my consle out and saw a box with yellow electrical connectors and a yellow tag. As far as I know yellow connectors and labels on electricial components in an Auto signify Air Bag system components. One errant slip with a screw driver or other object could short wires and earn you a unintentional deployment. I would look at the wiring to see if any of the under console wiring is nicked in any way.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
When are you gonna get a clue? Like I already said-- I don't care what a manual or service bulletin says..... it's always a good idea to disconnect your battery before disassembling anything on your car.
If HIS tech had done that, then the airbag would have never deployed. Simple as that.

Well everybody, bad news, it looks like Infiniti Canada is going to disappoint again. Apparently they will not honour the warranty for this situation due to the fact that my installer "TAMPERED" with the console cover. Can you believe that? They didn't even look or ask to inspect the wiring for defects, just an outright NO. What the hell kind of customer service is that. Basically it came down to if you alter or attempt to take apart any part of the car that leads to any kind of damage to that part or any other part of the car, will indeed void your warranty for the damaged part and any other related parts. In other words "DONT TOUCH YOUR CAR" only sit in it and drive it but don't even think about any mods or you are on your own.
Sorry for the rant, but this is my first and probably now my last import that I will ever purchase, and I bought it thinking that I could really have some fun fixing this car up the way that I like, hell I was even going to put a supercharger in next spring but there's no way I'm going to do that now.
If any of you are going to do mods yourself, God help you if something goes wrong and you need Infiniti's help, because it probably won't be there.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
You Know Sammy JL, I had a Lexus SC300 5MT coupe before my G35 6MT coupe. As much as I love this car, I'm sure it will be my last Infiniti. Lexus was a class act. I had my SC for 10 years and they were always eager to please. They even updated my taillights to those from a later model, because I liked the looks of the 95s better (and this was in 1999 for gosh sakes). That's eager to please. When I was unhappy with Infiniti's console change (I wanted the new console). Infiniti of Tucson would gladly order the parts and charge me full retail for them, but refused to install it, because it was in their opinion, a modification. Infiniti Customer Service stood behind them. Thank goodness for Grubbs, I ordered the part from them, and with their telephone help and the post from Puff, I installed it myself. To bad the Grubbs's of the Infiniti world are so few and far between. Lexus really didn't have a car for me this time around. Next time, I'll make myself fit to one of their models. End of rant. Sorry for your pain.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
well, you could always file on your insurance and have them go after the place that did it.
I feel your pain on the warranty claim.. but I understand their position. Did you see the circumstances with your own eyes that caused the deployment? I mean, people have been adding car computers and running their own sat cables with nothing like this happening. Just curious if you saw this happen and whether there could be actually be something that made the bag deploy.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
Just out of curiosity did you tell them what the installer did, or did you go in there and tell them that the airbag just popped out by itself when you were driving?
Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
I made the mistake of telling them the truth, that the installer removed the cover to get to the bottom of the shifter so that he could remove the **** without damaging the boot. I know, I know with Infiniti, "Honesty is not the best policy". I should have told them that I was driving along and all of a sudden the air bag went BOOM, then maybe they would have at least looked for a defect in the wiring or harness instead of just saying it was the installer's fault.
BTW, the installer is going to cover the entire cost of the repair because he is a "stand up" guy and values his customers, but Infiniti really "dropped the ball" on this one.
The only minute positive thing out of all of this is that the service manager said that he will try and give me a break on the cost of the air bag, but I'm still waiting for the quote.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
tpware,
I was right there in the passenger seat 2 minutes before the air bag went off. All he was doing was trying to get the shifter **** off and when he wasn't successful he decided to remove the console cover so that he could get a better grip on the shifter. When he started to have trouble with the shifter ****, I said that I would go and look up any instructions on this forum because I knew that others had done this already. When I sat down in the next room to use the computer, I heard what sounded like a gunshot go off and ran back to see what had happened. The tech stumbled out of the car and was laying on the ground because of the noise of the air bag deploying practically deafend him and caused some dizziness. If I had stayed in the car that probably would have been me laying on the floor only it probably would have done more damage to me than it did to him. I guess you could say that this forum "saved my life" or close to it.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
he may be a stand up guy, not questioning that, but since you didnt actually see it happen.. I mean, his tech could be lying to him. I wouldnt want to own up to disconnecting that harness or shorting it! He'd probably lose his job.
Thing is, if you *truly* believe it went off on its own, whats to prevent it from happening again? seems like a pothole or bump could cause it. Simply replacing the bag wouldnt be a good enough answer for me.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
BTW, if it’s true that they refused to look at your car out right that’s against the FTC’s “MAGNUSON MOSS WARRANTY ACT.”
The dealer must provide written PROOF what technically caused the airbag to go off not just say that it was the installer’s fault for tampering with the console, therefore they must look at your car even though you said that quite possibly the installer did it.

I don't know if the same thing applies up here in Canada. Yes, this happened north of the border and no wise cracks about us Canadians "Eh", as my beef is with Infiniti corporate not the location of the dealer.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
Take it from a lawyer....when in doubt, shrug your shoulders, say, "I have no idea" then proceed to bitch at them for almost killing your son. In fact, I'd drive to another dealer and try this route. UNLESS they already red flagged your car.
Good luck.

Re: Air bag deployed as tech tried to change shifter.
My advise when dealing with the morons at the dealership is to LIE LIE LIE! Never tell those bozos the truth regarding modifying anything on the car.
I know it was already said, but I'd try another dealership and lie to them. What's the worst thing they could do if you are "red flagged" already? Tell you no? F-EM!
