Jacking + jack stands
Jacking + jack stands
Ok,
I read a few posts on jacking the coupe but there is still something that's not clear. Someone posted a page from the FSM that shows the floor jack locations which raise the entire front or rear of the car. That makes sense. At this point, one would normally place jack stands at the pinch weld jacking points. I'd prefer not to trash the pinch weld however.
Except for a 2" square area around the pinch weld, that whole area is covered by the plastic side valence. I'm going to take the safe route and assume that any pressure here, even from a dadoed 2x4 will crack the valence. A 2" square piece of dadoed wood, even hardwood, will certainly crack (for the non woodworkers a dado is just a slot).
On the FSM page they show a jack stand adapter (actually even these look like they would overlap onto the valence). I'll probably regret asking but anyone know how much these are? Even if they are reasonable I have asked dealers about SST's before and they give me a quizzical look. I think those SST's are only available in Japan. Besides, most dealers won't even sell the FSM nevermind a SST and they don't use jackstands anyhow.
Another possibility is to buy 2 of these and adapt them to a jack stand.

Someone posted that they cut it down to the 2" square size (for use with floor jack) so it would not touch the valence. The post could be cut off so they could be placed on a jack stand but there would be no attachment clip to the jack stand as in the SST. I suppose I could drill through the adapter and stand perch for a small bolt but it's getting quite involved.
Any other suggestions?

i also am wondering about this. but i would just use a good piece of hard wood or i've heard ppl use hocky pucks. but what i don't understand is that if the only way to use jackstands is to use the center jack point, how are we suppose to see the center jack point from the ground? esspecially if our car is lowered???
Things you'll need:
1 Floor Jack
2 to 4 jack stands
4 'things' to protect your side jack points once lowered onto your jack stand
I jack from the front and the back center jack points. If your car is lowered then you have to drive up onto 2x4's or for really wide tires 2x6's to get high enough to get a floor jack under. Once an end of the car is up high enough I place 2 jacks, one on each side under the 'pinch welded' area jack points. I created an adapter out of a notched piece of wood to prevent the jack stand from bending the pinch weld and that clears the valance. The illustration you show has a manufactured part that accomplishes this that, I believe, does not exist. There are other threads on that. As an option to the notched block of wood, on another one of these threads someone said that they used a 'soft' hockey puck, the kind used in indoor floor hockey, unmodified to seperate the jack stand from the car. They said it was plyable enough to protect the car. I don't think I would do that but... whatever.....
Once you get one end up. Move your floor jack to the other end and repeat.
If you want a pic of my 'custom' notched wood let me know, I'll take one and post it.

Binar,
You are right. When I said that a 2x2" piece of wood would crack I was thinking that the pinch weld would contact the wood. Of course you have to cut the slot deep enough so that it will not but shouldn't be a big deal. If the wood were to crack the car would just settle an inch or so. UHMW poly might be better and it can be cut just like wood.
Of course I have the wrong type of jack stands (they have a cast perch) but jack stands are cheap.
I agree that the part probably doesn't exist except possibly in Japan. Dealers do not use jack stands!
I had a Supra on which I had to do major repairs and I naively went into the dealership which I had a good relationship with (because I spent so much on parts) and asked about an SST. They told me they have no idea what those SST numbers are. When they need a special tool they just ask the Snap On guy.
The car (my wifes) is new and hopefully all I'll have to do is oil changes for at least 30k miles so I could use a ramp but they are so limited in their usage and they take up a lot room when stored.

Like so:

Cross section view. Poorly created in photoshop.
