well i got it back from the dealer and it is still grinding in 5th, i dont really know what to do. Replacing the clutch at 20k miles--that just sounds ridiculous to me.

go to another one. if the clutch was messed up it wouldnt do it in only ONE gear. tell them that. ask to speak to the service manager. its common sense. if clutch is messed up, all gears would grind, not just 5th

I have had the same problem lately. My 5th gear grinds when i shift in low rpm range from 4rth (below 2200rpm). That is the only time it does it.

Is everyone forgetting about the plate that keeps the driver from accidentally going into the reverse gear slot? If you back that plate off a hair it will diminish the effort it takes to move the stick into the 5th gear slot—unless of course you can't drive manual tranny's worth a darn and you really HAVE smoked your clutch Do a search for the plate remedy!

Clutch on my maxima lasted 150k and that was the first manual i ever drove. Also the only reason the clutch was replaced is because the tranny was being rebuilt at the time. Don't believe these guys, they will flat out lie to your face without an issue. The service manager told me that using synthetic oil would void my warranty because it's a 0 weight oil. Needless to say I won't deal with that ********** anymore.
What other people said about it being the tranny and not the clutch is correct. Clutches slip when they wear out not grind and it would slip in 1st and 2nd gear not 5th. Go back, tell them they are full of ****. Anyone know if there is some hotline or something where you can report service managers and such for being ****** like this?

This seems to be an actual issue even though there is no recall or TSB, it's not about bad driving or carless driving, an actual issuing where 3rd and 5th gear seems to griding easily

Sounds like my old tranny. It started with 5th then 3rd started giving me problems. I would take it to another dealer. My dealer replaced trans+clutch under warranty. It was a synchro problem.

yes its a synchro problem
i took my car in for the 4th time to a dealer in the valley. went for a test drive and they verified the problem. then they proceeded to tell me it was the clutch. i had the clutch replaced at 26k miles with the transmission the first time it went in. i went in at 39k miles the last time. your telling me a clutch went out within a 13k mile period? not possible if you have NO clue how to drive a stick. then how is it that only 5th is grinding if its just the clutch?? makes NO sense. then i was told it was about 1700 dollars to replace the clutch including labor. i asked if they replaced it and they diagnosed that it was actually the tranismission would I get re-imbursed?? answer was a straight up NO. so i would have wasted 1700 on a repair that wasn't needed.

So anyone have their transmission replaced and things all good now? Or are there still problems?

Mine is ok so far but i've only put ~1k miles on the new transmission. Some people are on their 3rd and 4th! This is widespread problem with g's and z's, nissan should own up to the problem.
