for those who have aftermarket parts
Re: for those who have aftermarket parts
This can be a "touchy" subject and it depends a lot on what aftermarket parts you're talking about. You might want to read up and do some research on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act passed in 1975. It states what things you as a vehicle owner have the right to install and change on your car, that will NOT viod your cars warrenty.
But as for all these "go fast" mods like air filters, superchargers, suspension kits and whatnot, which I will assume you're talking about... The simplest rule of thumb you should remember and what most dealerships follow is, if something goes wrong with your car, and they can prove without a doubt the aftermarket part and or accessories caused the problem, then they can deny and or void that specifif warranty claim. If they can't, then it must be covered.
For example, you install a supercharger, and a month later you blow the transmission. The dealer can deny your warrenty claim to have your trans rebuilt and or repalced, due to the 40 to 50% increase in power of the engine, which ultimately toasted the trans. Thats a common one and its hard to get around, but lets say you install an aftermarket air filter kit and do the same thing, blow your trans. Proving without a doubt that a mere air filter swap caused the problem becomes harder to pass by to both the customer and in this case Infiniti.
The realtionship you have with your dealerships is also VERY important. If they value your business, then they'll do whatever it takes to keep you a customer and ultimately HAPPY! They'll look the other way if needed. You have to understand, as a dealership, when warranty work is performed on a car, they're payed a THIRD!!!! book calculated rate then what you would pay if it was a straight non-warrenty job! Plus they're not pressed for time. That is why dealerships would prefer non-warrenty work, and will quite often find ways to get out of warrenty jobs. Its not that they have to follow orders, or thats what the book says, its all about MONEY!
So the next time you go in for a simple oil change or srevice check up, instead of making cracks at the lube techs, and pointdexster looking service managers, try and buddy up to them, becouse one day you just may need them "to look the other way" if ya know what I mean....
