HELP! clutch, transmission, flywheel

ok heres the deal i just went to the dealership and ive been experiencing a "notchines" in 3rd gear it goes in but not smoothly grinds rarely. They said it is my flywheel and in the process they gotta replace the transmission and clutch with it. ive been reading throughout the boards that this is a problem with the 03-04. My car has 56k miles and is an 03 but isnt this a lil soon for these major problems to happen? They said theyll replace everything but the flywheel which i have to pay for but its pretty costly $1300. Ive read the dealers have replaced this before under warranty what should i do? any comments would greatly be appreciated thanks guys! im in socal and i took it to costa mesa infiniti

I'd bet the flywheel has nothing to do with it... grinding is usually because of bad or worn synchros in the tranny...

+1 - Just get the tranny/clutch replaced on warranty and forget about they flywheel. It should be fine.

They are telling me the clutch is a friction part and it is not covered under warranty. But 56k for a clutch to already go out isnt that a bit soon?

They are screwing you. Either take it to another dealer or call infiniti customer care and complain. This a known problem. It's funny that dealers pretend this is the first time they have ever heard of it.

Even more funny is the fact that many have had the clutch/flywheel replaced under warranty when the transimission had to be replaced. Looks like they're trying to turn it around on you by claiming a wear-and-tear item is causing the transmission issue.

What should you do??? Take our advice!!! Take it to another dealership or call Infiniti Consumer Affairs and explain what the dealership is doing. Tell ICA that there has been plenty of these issues and that you refuse to pay for the 1300 hand job.

Well, you're probably going to have to pay some amount of money. While some dealers have replaced the clutch/flywheel under warranty, I haven't read about that happening with as many miles as you have. Let's face it, the clutch & flywheel are wear items. Even if you do have to pay for something, at least it's not the tranny.

Look into the JWT setup.

I had my tranny replaced twice and only once they said that I was going to have to pay for the clutch. I called ICA and they took care of it for me.

granted, like trey said, my mileage wasn't that high. My first replacement my mileage was around 12,000 and for my 2nd replacement my mileage was around 18,000. That 2nd tranny (first replacement) only lasted around 6,000 miles.

Good luck.

I know a thing or two about engines so this is really throwing me off!
How does a FLYWHEEL wear out? It's a weight and that is it. It helps to smooth things out and does a few other things but really all it does is SPIN!
Please educate me as I don't see how a flywheel can wear out.

They are simply grabbing you by your *****. The transmission is most likely the only thing that needs to be replaced, they are just trying to get money out of you. Take it to another dealership and tell them you are having tranny issues and it needs replacement

I looked at the service manual a bit to check out the flywheel. As far as I can tell any premature deformation or damage would be the result of poor design and not driving. I beat the cr@p out of my last manual transmission car and it was AWD! I put over 100000 miles on that clutch/transmission/flywheel, you name it.
If these issues are part of the 06's my local dealer is gonna HATE me ;o)

They told me that the clutch is redesigned to work with the newer revised trannies. So yes, they will need to change at least the clutch and clutch assembly.
