Your exhaust heats up your catalytic converter which in turns burns off excess fuel in your exhaust. A cold catalytic converter can't burn anything, so get it nice and hot before you go in. Take the car out and drive it hard in low gears before you go in to get your emissions tested.

I just heard that from my muffler guy. We were just talking and that came up because I am getting resin. test pipes and was asking him about smog checks.

Catalytic converters don't turn on or off. All it is, is a ceramic block in your exhaust system. You can't expect a 5 mile drive under normal driving conditions to heat it up enough. Put a 2 pots of water on the stove, one at high heat and one on low for 5 minutes and tell me which is hotter. It's the same principal.

As for the evap system, i haven't a clue. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with emissions though.

Just curious, What state are you in? Even with California's strick laws, new cars don't require emissions tests until they are 4 years old, which yours isn't. After that 4-year mark, it's every other year.

Does any of this make sense? It's not like I never drove the car above 50 mph or for longer trips. Does the catalytic converter and the evaporative system only stay activated on longer trips or are they always on? He suggested for me to drive it for 30 miles straight. Will this solve the problem?

Didn't he tell you it would solve the problem?

I took mine from my house to Massapequa infiniti for my last inspection. The drive was maybe 15 minutes tops. I am sure the car sat awhile before the did the inspection and even with HFC I passed with flying colors.

Apparently the new NY inspection doesn't use an exhaust probe in the exhaust. I think they connect to the OBDII and as long as no emissions codes come up, you're all set/ My receipt didn't include any exhaust gas info.

As for NY inspection, IT SUX!!!

Safety only for the first 2 years of a new vehicle. After that, we are required to have the full inspection EVERY YEAR!!!! It's a PITA!!!
