Help! Whining Noise when Turning the Wheel!
I just noticed this today. I dont know if this is normal or if it isn't. When I turn my wheel all the way to the right or all the way to the left and give the car some gas, the engine makes a whining noise as it rev's up. This is either when going forward or reversing.
It's like an added whing noise to the engine noise. Can someone try this on their car and see if this happens as well? I have a Manual Tranny, so this might be a little different from Auto.
I also had another question for you guys. When I drive on long trips with my G35 (from LA to SD) and I am on street roads and I come to a stop sign, I here the stick rattling. This only happens when I drove for at least an hour or more, not short trips to the market or school.
I first noticed this when I pulled up to a stop sign after driving for a while and I could hear this rattling/grinding noise at idle, in neutral. As I put my ear closer to the stick, I could hear it rattling, like the gears grinding, but not as pronounced. I dont really know the best way to explain it. It similar to when your in put the car in first from a standstill and accelerate away, there is that moment where the clutch is engaging and it sounds like the gear is moving into place. If you give the car too much gas and not enough clutch you can hear the clutch hesistating. Sorry for the babble, but I dont really know how to explain it. I guess its a rough idle, and the stick is marginally shaking.
Sorry for the long and unamusing post, but I get worried that something might be wrong. Bad things always happen to my cars, whether its dents, scratches or bent rims. This car gives me so much stress.
Thanks again guys/gals.

Re: Help! Whining Noise when Turning the Wheel!
That noise is you turning the steering wheel too far. Usually in the manual it will say not to turn the wheel to the extreme ends....it puts stress on the parts. That is what it said in my manual for my Mustang.....or maybe that was for the Avalanche. All I know is.....don't do it.

It is harmful if you do make a habit of it. And, if it screams in normal turning before you get to the stopping point, your power steering fluid is probably way too low.

Dan, the stick is directly mounted onto the tranny, so you will get lots of vibration, that is normal, as far as sound good, its the tranny parts spinning around, its normal
