Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
you can learn to drive a manual in 1 day. i did. it's just a matter of practicing so that you can drive without stalling, giving passengers/yourself whiplash, or rolling backwards into someone's car when you're on a hill. good luck and have fun.

ya, you can learn heel-toe downshifting and rev matching (ie downshifting without braking) later.. its not that important, not doing it wont damage your car.
just try not to ride the clutch too much...

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
My dad plopped me in a parking lot 10 miles from my house. He drove home and left me with his 5MT SHO. "If you can't get home, you don't deserve to be there" is all he said, then he drove off.
Not really, but wouldn't that be cute? Anyway, driving a stick's not hard-- have someone you know and trust who A) is a good pedagogue (this is IMPORTANT, bad teachers SUCK), B) knows how to drive a stick. Spend an hour or so in a parking lot to get down the basics, then go from there. You'll pick it up, I have faith in you *bow*

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
For those of you that familiar with driving a stick, drive a MT BMW M3 with the 'Sport' button pushed on. Try to take off slowly and smoothly from a stop.
Everyone around you will think you're a rank beginner at the stick! It took me 3 tries before I could do it with out the M3 bucking and jerking! My buddy that owns the car told me that it took him about 6 or 7 tries to take off smoothly the 1st time with the sport button pushed!
Mind you, if you take off like you're serious, its all grins!

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
First time I drove an M5, I almost pi$$ed myself I was so frustrated. I finally got it down though, they're tough little buggers.
The first MT car I ever drove was a 1972 Jeep CJ5 with 3 whole gears and a whopping 16 inch throw! I was 14. This was in Sun Valley, a mountain town. Hills galore. Oh my lord, I thought I'd never learn how to drive a stick after that experience. Then I drove my dad's SHO. Muuuuuuuch better

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
PS-- Don't wear stiletto heals when you're learning to drive a 6MT!! I tried to teach a girl once, and she had them on... not good. Not that you'd wear them or anything, but you know, whatever floats your boat man.

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
If you've never driven a MT before, don't spend too much time on any other MT car, the G's clutch is a bit different
Take your G (or ask someone to drive you to an empty parking lot) and practice, try to start smoothly without stalling and just focus on your starts, stops and take things one step at a time. Once you learn to control the clutch you'll feel soooooo good!.... Trust me you won't go back to AT. The hill scenario scares a lot of people, but after a couple of days of practice it won't even be an issue, you'll instinctively know where the engagement point on the clutch is and thats probably the most important thing to get the hang of.
good luck!

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
U-Haul is how I did my first MT driving. Those things are pretty good for MT driving 101. Next up I tried my buddy's Cavalier. A little trickier than the U-Haul but I kinda got the feel of a car's clutch. Then the G. The first couple of days I stalled very often until I finally got the hang of the G's clutch. Very tricky, other experienced MT drivers will tell you so. Good luck!!!

Re: where can i learn to drive manual?
the clutch is the thing that gets a lot of people that drive the
G. 1) the clutch "catches" very late...like maybe an inch or two before it is fully released. and 2) the clutch has a heavy feel...as in it takes a lot of force to push in the clutch...and it also has a strong push back. Does the clutch work on a spring? maybe someone can call it a "mod" and get a lighter spring. anyways, good luck and keep practicing. You'll get it in a few days.
