Question about fender bender
Question about fender bender
Hoping some of u can answer this one for me...
...i was driving behind some stupid lady on the road, and she SLAMS on her breaks in the middle of an intersection...unfortunately i couldn't stop in time....it wasn't a big accident, I literally tapped her. Regardless, she calls the cops and he writes up a report.
Just wondering, will the fender bender show up or increase my car insurance premiums?? The cop didn't give me a ticket or anything and he said that it wasn't a big deal, but he still wrote up a report. I'm "optimistic" that it won't, but dunno. Anyone?

I am not listed under my father's insurance plan...and i haven't had anything on my record, but after this incident...does this mean he has to list my name under his insurance plan???
Sorry...what i mean is...I was driving my dad's car. It's an X5, and it was listed under his name under his insurance plan...but I am not listed any where in his insurance plan.
What i am asking is...NOW that i got in my VERY FIRST accident/fender-bender, does that mean he has to now list me under his plan?? Or can I just claim that I was just borrowing his car, and that I am a college student so I am not home often enough to drive...Can i use that excuse to avoid being listed under the insurance plan??

Depending on your insurance policy language, you may or may not be covered under your dad's policy. The policy may exclude certain aged drivers from coverage unless listed (say, under 21 or under 25, or unlisted children of the policy holder). If the lady you hit reports the accident to her insurer, or your dad's, you'll find out. If your dad reports the accident to his insurer, you'll also find out. Either case will likely result in a premium increase.

Offer to cover the expence of her repair out of pocket.
BTW, you should be covered as a "guest" driver, but it could get complicated if you live in the same house. He should have listed you as soon as you were able to drive. They could stick it to you.

By far the best policy is to have everyone in the family listed on all cars in the family. Each person can be primary on specfic cars. I know of a case where a young guy bought a late model used M3 and to save about a $1K a year on Insurance costs, he listed his father as the owner and primary driver. Well the worst happened and the teenager was involved in a very serious accident with another car. Two people were injured in the other car and the liability claim was well over $100K.
The last I heard is that the guy's Insurance company hired an Investigator who was able to prove that the son was the primary driver of the M3, and that the Insurance coverage was voided because fraudulent information was provided to the Carrier. The father then hired a lawyer and sued the Insurance company, and I don't know the final resolution of that case. But regardless of how it turned out, the father and son were in a sh*t storm all because they wanted to save $1K on Insurance fees.
I am 22 yrs old, so I dunno about the age restrictions. Nonetheless, it wasn't a serious accident...just a scratch on her car, but she was kinda worked up about it since it apparently happened to her a week ago or something. I just graduated from University of Maryland, so I can claim that I was always at school and didn't have the car. I just wasn't listed to save some money on the insurance. This is the first "stain" i've had on my record. Anyway, I know the premium is going up, but I just don't want to force my dad to list me as a primary driver.
