6th to 2nd shift, need a peace of mind regarding damage.
I dont think there is any damage done, however I dont know the mechanics of a manual tranny and these engines very well. Basically I was about to get on a highway interchange. I went to shift from 6th to 4th, but missed 4th and hit second. I must not have been paying attention, because it takes some effort to throw it in second instead of 4th. Anyways, I started to let out the clutch, and I could tell right away that something wasn't right. I looked at the RPMs, and they were jetting up to around 4-5k. By the time I shoved the clutch back in, it *might* have been up to 6k, doubtful though, probably more like 5.5k.
I dont think there is much in the way damage done considering I didnt hit redline, but I wanted some second opinions for a simple peace of mind. All I could think was 'ouch, that sucks...'
When upshifting, I have pushed the redline pretty good on occasion and have yet to really feel the rev-limiter. There is one, right? So the only way to really over-rev the engine is a mechanical over-rev by downshifting to a really low gear and forcing the RPM's up. (at least thats my understanding of it).
Any thoughts or comforting explanations are welcomed! However I am also interested to learn at what point damage begins on this type of situation.
Thanks for reading!

your fine, dont let it happen again. I went form 6th to 2nd and threw it deep past redline and ended up frying the piston rings. Got a new VQ out of it, so it was all good, be careful.

You're very fortunate.

Thats basically what I was thinking, I just wanted to hear it from someone else
. I think I have a pretty good feel on the car, overall. And even with the radio up, I could still tell something wasn't right almost right away.
Ya know something else thats tough... the heel/toe deal when downshifting while cornering.

Oh well, either way - I appreciate all of the words of wisdom. Lesson learned!
