Unhappy 6th to 2nd shift, need a peace of mind regarding damage.

I dont think there is any damage done, however I dont know the mechanics of a manual tranny and these engines very well. Basically I was about to get on a highway interchange. I went to shift from 6th to 4th, but missed 4th and hit second. I must not have been paying attention, because it takes some effort to throw it in second instead of 4th. Anyways, I started to let out the clutch, and I could tell right away that something wasn't right. I looked at the RPMs, and they were jetting up to around 4-5k. By the time I shoved the clutch back in, it *might* have been up to 6k, doubtful though, probably more like 5.5k.

I dont think there is much in the way damage done considering I didnt hit redline, but I wanted some second opinions for a simple peace of mind. All I could think was 'ouch, that sucks...'

When upshifting, I have pushed the redline pretty good on occasion and have yet to really feel the rev-limiter. There is one, right? So the only way to really over-rev the engine is a mechanical over-rev by downshifting to a really low gear and forcing the RPM's up. (at least thats my understanding of it).

Any thoughts or comforting explanations are welcomed! However I am also interested to learn at what point damage begins on this type of situation.

Thanks for reading!

You don't have to worry about anything if you didn't pass redline. FYI, the rev limiter doesn't protect you against mechanical over-rev.

your ok, if something was brojken you would know it, the motor can be redlined just not for a long time, extended period of time.

your fine, dont let it happen again. I went form 6th to 2nd and threw it deep past redline and ended up frying the piston rings. Got a new VQ out of it, so it was all good, be careful.

Thats basically what I was thinking, I just wanted to hear it from someone else . I think I have a pretty good feel on the car, overall. And even with the radio up, I could still tell something wasn't right almost right away.

Ya know something else thats tough... the heel/toe deal when downshifting while cornering.

You would know if you did any damage, my brother borrowed my m3 and did the same thing, blew the motor - lost compression in 4 cylinders, the car drove like it was being held by a rope

Indeed he was. This is the one way that you can easily blow an engine since after the gear is fully engaged, the rev limiter won't save you.

I'm completely on board here. The other thing that's strange is that I have not seen the rev limiter kick in yet. Whether that be revving or when upshifting right at about redline.

Oh well, either way - I appreciate all of the words of wisdom. Lesson learned!
