From BMW to G35c
From BMW to G35c
Late yesterday afternoon I got caught in the commute traffic while traveling Northbound on US 101 in Marin County. It was stop and go about 5 MPH. It was a beautiful cool afternoon, and I had my windows down. At one of the many stops, a gentleman in a very shiny BMW convertible shouts out, how did I like my G35? Totally awesome I responded. He said: "can't wait the two weeks until my new G35c arrives." He knows a value when he sees one.

Re: From BMW to G35c
I wouldn't call this car a value over a BMW 330Ci. Sure, we pay $7K less for the car itself initially, but I feel we pay for that difference over time anyways. We have to pay for our service (whereas BMW has free scheduled maintenace for 4 years/50,000 miles), and for those of us with the Brembo brakes, we have to pay for those expensive $500+ brake jobs. Plus, the average BMW 3-series has a residual value of 60-65% after 3 years of ownership whereas the average Infiniti is at 50-51% after 3 years (hopefully it will be better for us G35C owners...our value can't be predicted yet as it hasn't been out for 3 years). Sorry to get so technical, my point is that the guy isn't really saving that much $$$ going with a G35C. =)
Re: From BMW to G35c
Word choice can make all the difference in the world. You're right, I should have used the word "thrill" rather than "value." He does know a thrill value when he sees one. At the price points for both of these machines, most are not shopping based upon price, but other important factors.

Re: From BMW to G35c
i saw an article not long ago gcoupe got best value within the class... 330ci is g coupe's class so... search it you will find easily.. and article says 65% for after 3years not 50-51% after 3years... if i remember correctly, 49% after 5 years.. that article didn't metion any 3 series but they did X5s which 51%... 330ci won't be far off from there...
g coupe 40k, after 5years 50% = 20k
330ci 50k, after 5 years 60% = 30k
or if you think it's 65%
330ci 50k, after 5 years 65% = 32.5k
10k difference and we pay 10k less when we buy so it's even out and if 330ci got 65% we lost $2500..not bad for infiniti considering BMW are known as strong resale values... and 330ci don't get 65% resale values... yet i never seen over 55% after 5 years.. show me if i'm wrong...

Re: From BMW to G35c
Although I agree partly with your argument regarding the value of the BMW versus the unknown value of the G35 Coupe after 3 years, there is no comparison when you compare the reliability between the 2 cars. I currently own a BMW 3 series and decided on ordering a GCoupe due to looks and reliability. 3 series BMW's has been downgraded by Consumer Reports and is not on the recommended list anymore. Although I was fortunate with my car, 3 of my co-workers drive a 3 series between 2000-2003 and all of them have had the strangest problems with them. It's great when the maintenance and repairs are paid for, but if you want to own the car after 3 years, the cost of maintenance will be outrageous. In comparison, the Infiniti brand has been rated only 2nd to Lexus in reliability. If BMW can not produce a 3 series with better reliability records, then I'll look elsewhere. I don't know about you, but I think its a "pain" bringing your car to the dealership multiple times throughout the year.
Just my opinion.

Good info, G35_4EVR. But I must say, I absolutely hate Consumer Reports...I really don't think they know what they are doing when it comes to cars...I think they should stick to toasters and toothbrushes.
As for the residual value, BMW's average residual value after 3 years is 60-65%..obviously, usually around 60% but there are some cases where they sell at 65%. This statistic is for the 3-series and 5-series, but mainly the 3-series.

i have a friend who owns a 2000 328i and man, that car honestly spends more time in the shop than being driven by her.. she's brought it in for air conditioning fixes almost at least once every two months.. her windows have malfunctioned where they stay closed/open every 6 months.. and it's in the shop, as we speak, because of a complete brake malfunction.. it is good that the maintenance is covered, but man, it's no reason her parents are trying to trade-in the car before the coverage runs up..
i was also being steered towards a 3 series, mainly because my parents have had BMW in the past and they just plain love it.. but i jus see so many on the streets, it's become as common as an accord/camry/corolla..

I saw the same thing, in the Kelly Blue Book site IIRC. It's just a projection of course, but it was very encouraging specifically as regards the G35C. A (coupe) class leading 49% value retention after 5 years is really quite excellent, and far better than the rest of the Infiniti line has been traditionally. Given the passion this car generates, I'm not entirely surprised either. Let's hope their forecast comes true.

Re: From BMW to G35c
i'm not sure how they rate the resale value but they do that for living(KBB)... also they rated new Z4 also...
and X5 introduced in 2000 which X5 has not been around for 5years... they look at the current sales, reliabilities, demands etc etc etc... and 04 G coupe rated at the top... just accept it...

Re: From BMW to G35c
Nah, I'm not going to accept it until I see 3-year old G35 Coupes being sold and how much they are being sold for. Then I'll know their 3-year residual value. So for now, I will just go by Infiniti's average 50-51% residual value (after 3 years), as that is what Infiniti's lease programs follow.
Re: From BMW to G35c
oh well then.. we should wait and see... KBB is the main source determining what's ur car worth? so if KBB said 65% for 3years and 49% after 5years...article came from CNN website which very trustful so it won't be far off...

My co-workers have gone through some of the same problems with their 3 series BMW's. For example, 2 transmission replacements, window problems, sticky brake pedal, passenger outside mirror flying off, door weather stripping coming off....well, you get the picture. Like I said in my previous post, there are 4 of us that drive 3 series BMW's and one day I asked them if they plan to purchase another one and all of them, including me, said No! I think just the die-hard BMW fans and those that like the status of saying they own a BMW make them overlook the problems that come with them and continue to buy BMW's. I decided not to push my luck and ordered a 2004 G Coupe. Hopefully it will arrive around the December holidays. What a way to celebrate. At least here in Florida it won't be 95 degrees outside the first time I CG the car!!!

Re: From BMW to G35c
Does anyone really believe that you get "free" service with BMW? I know I sure didn't with my Bimmers. I may not have had to pay the service department for my oil changes... but I did pay the sales department, that's for sure.
The cost of "free" maintenance is included in the sales price with BMW (and other luxury vehicles)
