Correct, the sound only comes from the passenger side. As far as the clarity, I've noticed that while talking through bluetooth you pick up a lot of background noise from the person calling you. If you try to speak while there's background noise, your voice will sound choppy over the phone.

My brother's prius with integrated bluetooth sounds the same.
I'm not sure if its the same mic, but the TL my friend test drove with voice-activated controls also barely understood what we were saying, unless we craned our necks upward into that overhead light assembly and yelled there while driving (the location of the microphone is in that console). If so, I presume the mics in all these cars are just horrible for a particular reason when it comes to bluetooth in general.

Tinny yes but it works fine
Compared to the VR system in my old CTS the G35 is miles ahead of it. It may sound tinny on the other end but the recognition is fine, I have yet to ever have to repeat a name or number when making a call. I DO close the sunroof to lessen the wind noise near the microphone. It would be nice if the mike had just a tad more low end response to make it sound more natural.

Volume
I've found that by turning the volume down people find the voice clarity tolerable. Around 14 or so does the job.
Windows open is not an option nor should it be ... there's a reason why people on stage nearly have their mikes in their mouths ... mike's pick up all surrounding sound and the closer you are to it the more you drown out the rest.
Maybe they'll consider moving those mikes closer to the driver's side ... I'm sure that would help a bunch.

Im a new G35C owner.. first time I've had a bluetooth setup.. Im actually pretty happy with the interface and the reception. Havent had any complaints during calls.. Could it be that some phones are better for bluetooth reception than others? I'm using a Razr, and usually talk with windows closed, but even with the sunroof open, it seems manageable.

I put the Motorola HS850 in my '03 and for the most part, it's wonderful. I wired it to my stock Bose amp so it runs the output to the rear speakers (I'm not running any rear fill with my stereo, so those speakers are unused anyway). Plus the control "box" mounted on the top left front of my center console, just in front of the ash tray, has a nice clean bling factor.

Sometimes mine works great, (I can hear and they can hear me fine) sometimes it's a POS and I call the G's interface voice all sorts of names...lol.
The system has lots of room for improvment, first being the mic location, IMO.
Most phones I hear will work with it, but Infiniti has a suggest list of phones they recommend. I'm using the Samsung a950
