Did you mean "compression braking" instead of just "downshifting"?

no it doesnt...as long as your foot is not on the gas and you end up shooting forward and crashing...its just changing to a lower gear in your transmission. and as far as it being bad on the tranny? i'll let someone else answer that, but I'd think not because its not like you're redlining by compression braking and you go to the same RPM when you're gunning the car anyway, but I could be wrong.

it affects mpg a little bit, but when you say compression braking are you downshifting from 4k rpm to 5k rpm, cuz for most part i go to 2k rpm in the current gear then up to around 3 when i downshift. Rarely I will go from 3k to 4k unless i have to stop a little more suddenly.

Brakes are cheaper to replace than a clutch/tranny...

Well yea...................

Yes, because your engine is reving at a higher rpm.
If you know how to drive it won't damage your
trans or clutch but will make your brakes last a
little longer. I put 125K on my 300ZX TT and always
down shifted but never more than one gear at a time.
I also didn't replace my brakes until I reached 118K!

It's putting more strain than necessary on your tranny, thus creating more wear... Is it worth it? Not to me...

downshifting is normal operation for teh tranny....pay attention to how an automatic acts...they downshift as well, just dont over do it and do it when rpms are gonna go crazy high.

I downshift often, but I try to rev match and use brakes too. If you know what you doing, how to do it and when to do it it will not have a noticable negative effect. When you don't downshift and just put it in neutral, and you don't stop, putting it back in gear as the car is still moving and not rev matching will put the same amount of strain on the trainy, so do whatever helps you sleep at night.
