Yep, did the search thing but could not find a definitive answer so I'm posting. Looking at picking up another VQ engine. Its out of a 2004 350Z. Will this engine be the same as my 2003.5 G35 VQ, or more appropriately, If I blew my engine, can I drop this one in with minimal change over? IS the long block the same?

Yes the engine itself is the same. The only difference is going to be if its a AT or MT. The engines are actually the same just the ECU is going to be different. The VQ engine for 05-07 is going to be differenct for the 6MT since it is a rev up motor. The Autos are all going to be the same since they are non-revup motors.

Everything is pretty much the same. The only thing different that i noticed was the oil pressure sensor which can be swapped over easily.

Thanks guys. Just what I needed to know. Since it was an auto, and I have an auto, swapping should be a nice weekend job at most (Friday thru Sunday). Ok off to buy a motor and a piece of mind. Thanks Again.

They are exactly the same, but if you are worried about blowing an engine and are willing to spend the money on a new one, why not either just rebuild your current one drop the compression and make it more suitable for boost, or build up the new motor like this so you wont have to really worry about it again. The VG is a really strong, and I've yet to hear of someone blowing one, so if you do, you're definitely doing something wrong.

I guess I should have added a little backround first (must be a slow day everywhere). I drive a unrealistic amount of miles to work daily, as in 250 round trip. I bought my 03.5 last year, November w/ 24,000 on it, I already have 69,000. I also want to build the engine but due to reliability and temperature variations (I'm in KY) and it is my daily driver, I want to build a stroker NA motor instead of going FI. So I found a nice low mileage 350Z motor and plan to swap it in the spring ( I should be around 100,000 miles on the origional engine by then). At that point take my origional engine and send it off to get sleeved and stroked. My aim is 350 - 400 hp but with a bullit proof high end internals engine. Granted, I would love to FI TT but until I can see some long term 100,000 mile FI installations I think this is the best possible scenerio.

Well, kids are in school, own our own house, taxes are cheap and hey I cant say I dont love driving my car that much : It is crazy but I do work from home now 1 day a week and I get paid for mileage which basically pays for the car and any mods I want. Wouldn't you drive it for an additional 20K a year?

I probably would, looks like you considered other options and went with this one. Good luck.

The swap................

At the end of the week, month and year that's a lot
of time spent away from your family. I don't have
all the answers but remember there's nothing more
important than family. It took me years to figure
that one out........time wasted!

Very very very true, thats why I leave at 5:30 am, get to work around 7 then leave 3:30-4 get home around 6. It allows my wife to stay at home with the kids (3 and 7) and still have somewhat of a normal life. I worked 2nd n 3rd shift before my kids. It was rough on our marriage let alone my system. Once we had our son (1st) I left that job in a heart beat. There are always compromises but your right, family always comes first.

M45 motor in the G

Thread jack. If the G and M are basically on the same chassis and the m AND both cars have the VQ35; why wouldn't the M45 be an easy fit (engine and trans) into the G. Just thing, 325 hp and 336 lbs of torque. I realize the weight split front to rear would change, but the M45 weighs just 16 pounds more thand the M35 (according to Infiniti's web site). I am not a mechanic and don't know the specifics, but would think the engine mounts would be in pretty similar places. Would it be pretty straight forward or very labor intensive? I did a search, but could not locate any threads.

very labor intensive, cramped in the engine bay, tranny is different, wiring is completely different, ecu Etc. You would need a donor M and take everything.
