I would look into the valentine V1 ($400) or the escort 8500 x50 (299 red LEDs, $349 blue LEDs). Both offer the same performance but both have there personal perks. The V1 has directional arrows showing you where the cop is shooting the radar from. To me this is not important, just makes you stare at the cop when you are passing him. The escort can be hooked up with there optional ZR3 laser shifter.
Laser guns (different the radar) are getting more popular and once you are hit by one the cop has your speed instantly. The ZR3 shifter are a laser shifter that deflect the laser that the cop it shooting. Your escort 8500 goes off telling you if they are shooting you from the rear or front. Once you hit the mute button on the detector stops the laser shifting which allows the cop to read your speed. This allows you to slow down and allows the cop to register your speed. You need to allow to register your speed so he doesn't pull you over, this is because laser shifter are illegal in all states.
I personally have the escort 8500 X50 with the passport ZR3 shifters and love the set up. Keeps me protected from radar and laser.

^correct on all parts expect that laser shifters are not illegal in all states. They are band in some jurisdictions around the country. In MD its not illegal and i know plenty of friends that run it and never turn it off. Some Lidar guns can tell when they are being jammed and others just wont show a speed. But none the less getting a detector pays for its self in the long run. You will be very happy with it. As for all the arrow pointing its really not needed. Your first reaction like everyone else should be to slow down and procced with caution no matter where its coming from.

I think you will find the following to be true, but which ever you buy, buy now, it pays for itself very quickly.
Passport 8500 and Valentine V1 should be your only choices. Prices are about the same given their respective "features"--you pay a little more for the V1 and for that extra price you get arrows telling you the direction of attack.
To some these arrows are superfluous--myself included, but other like the added functionality.
If you want to get super exotic, get a Lasar shifter (illegal in many states). More money, more function, custom install.
