Make your own In-Cabin Filter

In-Cabin filters have been beaten to death on this place, but I haven't seen anythign on making your own from filters laying around the house. I'm not a cheapo, but I've got a load of filters for my home's HVAC, as well as some carbon meshes. Any DISadvantages to making my own carbon-laced in-cabin filters by cutting up some down to size?
