Stillen CAI, Wow!

I know that CAIs only add a couple HP, if that, and they are more for sound and state of mind than anything else (where the G coupe is concerned) but regardless of all that and what anyone else says, the Stillen CAI I just installed made a big difference.

I had the MREV+, MD 5/16 and a Z tube already but with a stock airbox, combined with a Borla exhaust. It all seemed to work well. I finally added the Stillen CAI and it really seemed to tie it all together. I believe the free flowing exhaust was not getting enough from the stock airbox to balance things out.

The CAI may have only added a few HP to the top end but the throttle response down low and the RPM ramp up are noticably improved.

It's not much of a post or a thread but I had to tell someone! My girlfriend just does the "dog head-tilt thing" when I get all excited about performance mods.

For all the bashing I've read around these forums about CAI's doing nothing more than change/add sound and butt dyno improvements.... this is the first thread I've come across that makes mention of a CAI improving other breather mods.

I'm curious if this is another butt dyno improvement or if a before/after dyno would show something substantia, or at least noticeable.

At any rate, congrats on getting some improvement and enjoyment out of the new mod!

Stillen..............Pop!

You've made some very good choices with your mods. By adding the CAI you just pulleds the
cork out of the bottle. All these mods can now
work togeather for more performance........LOL

Just be careful and do a search on the cars that had their engine shut off on them because the had the CAI.

Just FYI" I've had an AEM CAI on my 04.5 6MT G coupe for over 50,000 miles and never once has it shut down, and yes, I do regularly run the f**k out of it, down shift hard even lug sometimes, never once shut down... Can be cruising at any speed and just shift to neutral and let off gas, the engine will drop down and idle perfectly, AC or no AC, in all weather conditions. It's all about a proper install, the way you handle the MAF sensor and position it is mounted and the proper tightening of the clamps all the way to the Throttle Body.

Proper procedure was not followed when installing the CAI. This is one reason why this happens people tend to use shortcuts in installing and not read all the instructions. I've had my Stillen CAI for more than 3 years and never experience any problems with it. Stillen, Z-tube and MD 1/2 in. spacer equals WOW!

im telling you its a fact that cais help a lil....cuz i raced my friends altima se-r the day befor my pop charger nermous runs both the day b4 and the day i did it and the car pulled away faster with it ( not alot either). Its not a sick mod thats gonna make your car an animal, but its a cheap, worthy mod just for the sound and looks. the power help is just added. I got the injen now in mine and i cant get over how sick it is.

This was from the Injen First generation CAI. They have fixed the problem since then. I believe all the other CAI were working fine on the G. I have the 1st generation injen CAI and have had it for about 50K miles and no problems so far. Gains have been great as well!

I did not dyno as stock nor have I dyno'd after. My finely tuned butt works fine and i can tell you that there is a difference. Like I said before, I realize that the top end improvement is probably not even measureable, but the throttle response and midrange strength is noticably improved. The next step is to get the ECU reflashed to compliment my mods and that will be done on a dyno.

I've read about hydro locking the engine due to water being sucked into a CAI. That is not an issue with the Stillen, as it relaces the stock airbox in that corner of the engine compartment. For CAIs that locate the filter low in the wheel well or in front of the radiator, hydro locking can be a concern.

Personally, I can't see why anyone would want to locate an air filter in the same vicinity as the wheel well. That could trash a filter very quickly. Not to mention the amount of crap that could get sucked through it and into the engine.
