What that burning smell?

I just got my used G35 (16000 miles).

I am having fun driving the car, but I am not killing it. However, when I step out of the car there is a very strong "burning" smell.

It seems to be coming from the front wheel area. One time I lifted the hood and didn't notice a stronger smell there, so I am wondering what it is.

I really have no idea.... someone suggested the clutch, but I have an auto. Another person sugggested that some of the junk the they sprayed on the tires to make them look extra black/shiny could be getting burnt up by the breaks. Dunno...

Any ideas? Any way to tell if this is something serious?

Re: What that burning smell?

Check your oil filter. I had one occassion where the filter loosened up and there was oil dripping onto the exhaust system. Smelled almost like burning rubber.

If it is a manual transmission, you may be working the clutch to hard....let the clutch off the floor faster or don't use as much gas when releasing.

I would take it in ASAP. Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Re: What that burning smell?

Could be a plastic bag burning on the exhaust pipe under the car.

Check your exhaust. I had a plastic bag get stuck to my exhaust and start melting. Get under the car and see if that isn't it.

Re: What that burning smell?

On a new car there is a burning smell for the first month or 2. This is perfectly normal. What it is, is the over-spray and the coating on the headers burning in. Kind of like "seasoning" an iron skillet, once it is burned in you won't smell it
