Re: I drive my 5AT like a MT..am I killing it?

Because every time I look inside a nice car and see a manual transmission, I get personally offended, because it's preventing the car from being as smooth and luxurious and technologically advanced as it can be. Like the owner is just posing or pretending to be a luxury car driver, as all real men aspire to be.

(Please note: the above is a parody of a certain type of post in the MT vs. AT threads, and should not be read literally.)

Re: I drive my 5AT like a MT..am I killing it?

I am glad somebody brought this up... I have had my car for exactly a year and I have not used the Manual Mode too much (just here and there). My sales person said that it could cause faster wear on the transmission, so I listened... now I know that was total B.S. So my question is at what RPMs should I upshift and downshift with the G? The last time I tried, it shook me pretty good going from 2nd to 3rd. Any hints would be helpful. Thanks.

personal experience. i upshifted at 2-2.5 for about a week. then i started shifting at 3-3.5. initially, the car would sort of jump during the shift but after about a week at the higher rpm, it now goes very smoothly.

So those of u that've been to the track doing 1/4 mile. If u use MM to race...by when (rpm) do u upshift? I'm assuming that leave in D would give u better time...but im curious how it would have be done to drive with MM in that case.

I've done the 1/4 mile and I was faster"Auto-manual" mode than "D" mode.
I experimented a lot, felt 1st gear sux at the top so I shift to 2nd at about 5,000 RPM. then red-line the beast till I win =)

DragonGcoupe,

Some ppl like to manually shift so much ..Why didn't they just get a MT instead?

We did bro, --- it's accompanied by an automatic mode, and no clutch.

Mooser, I too shift into N for stops. I've done that since the days of Generators when idling used to drain the battery a little. The habit stuck, but I think it also prevents heat buildup in the tranny.

Pingo: No worries bro.... that's what it's for. Moderate use as described, I'm sure is fine.
If there's anything bad going on in the tranny, if flashes the 'AT check warning light', which is a signal that you're overdoing it.

Haha.. I hope I didn't offend anyone, I juss meant that the MM isn't actually a gear selector, as I have heard. Rather it picks the top gear?

IMO I don't really like the look of the AT shifter, the entire setup. Nissan did a good job of the shifter for the MT this time.

This is true of the Sedan.. The coupes MM mode is actually a gear selector.. I wonder why Infiniti did it that way in the Sedan...

With most cars your expectation is correct, but not the Coupe. Manual mode gives you a much better time than just Drive mode, around .2 to .3 seconds in my experience. Not sure about the Sedan, since it's manual mode has a different type of computer control.

On the Coupe, after it's broken in, the proper place to shift in 1st gear is 6000 rpms (if you keep it floored, the actual shift will occur just before redline). With every gear after that, you shift a little later. But the first time you try this with your Coupe, shift early, like at about 5000 rpms. See where you end up before it shifts. Then try doing it a little later, and so on.
