I always drive in the T/T mode and even downshift it....love the torque I feel...1600 miles on the car and usually shift at 3-4000 rpms... does it hurt to run those rpms cruising or should I vary it?...Didn't buy for gas mileage ! Pingo

Good to hear the thumbs up on downshifting the AT. My dealer actually said to leave it in D and never downshift. HE didn't reccomend upshifting either??? I cant help it and I DS anyway. I try and DS at 3500 or so and worried endlessly (until now) whenever I hit 4500 on a downshift. Now I can end those sleepless nights hunched over in the dark closet sweating and shaking worried that I am killing my tranny but am to addicted to my old MT that I can't stop shifting, Hell I used to manually select D1, D2 and D3 when i drove a buick.
Funking Philly traffic. Thank god this is the Q tranny in our GAT's

I run my 5AT in manual almost always. Just remember to be around no more 3500 rpm before downshifting otherwise it is a little excessive wear on the drive train. I say this as a rule of thumb until you get used to it's personality. You don't want to "bang" the drivetrain or over-rev your engine.
I'm sure you didn't buy the G for fuel mileage, otherwise you'd be driving a honda insight, toyota echo, or some other gas miser.

Sounds like you're doing the same thing I'm doing, having fun! I don't drive my rough, but I'm in MM about 75% of the time. Once I get it up to the speed limit, I move it back over to Auto. Then back to MM, downshifting, when I'm coming to a stop. I do catch myself doing one thing every single time. When I know I'm coming to a complete stop, I'll move it back over to Auto and then put it in Neutral just before I stop. That allows me to sit at the light without brakes applied, or do a "roll back" just a little. And that kinda makes a statement to the other drivers around me. Reminds me of my old Maxima 5MT days. One thing is for sure, it's sure is nice to have both modes!

haha
I thought I was the only one. I do the same thing. Except I usually don't donwshift from 3 when coming to stop. I let the car drop it from 3 to 1 and skip 2. There is a bit of knock from 2 to 1. Enjoy, I know I am.

The one thing I have to say on downshifting is that it seems to shift more smoothly if you press the gas simultaneously with tapping the stick. If you have your foot off the gas, it can "clunk" rather painfully, which is why I never downshift in MM when coming to a stop.

The grounding kits #7 wire does more for the downshift than anything. The most noticeble aspect of the #7 is less clunking from 3 to 2 and i never go 2 to 1 - you wouldn't in an MT unless you were in very slow traffic right?

That's what I forgot to add on my previous reply. When downshifting to a complete stop, as 2nd is winding down, I'll move it over to Auto before it gets to 1st, to avoid that "abrupt" transition. Then in most cases, I'll put in neutral until it's time to go again. Then it goes back to MM until I reach cruising speed.

Some ppl like to manually shift so much ..Why didn't they just get a MT instead?

I see your point. It's because it provides a variety. Kind of like cake and ice cream. Why just have cake when you can have the ice cream with it? You would have a much better understanding if you had an AT.
