DIY: Auto On Headlights
DIY: Auto On Headlights
This probably applies more to the >05 G35 but might also work for the previous years. The always on cluster in our car looks great during the day, but at night, it makes you think your headlights are on when they're not. So what to do? Make the headlights turn on automatically.
As many of you probably already have this feature, but for those that didnt want to pay $2850 for the premium package, we can add this feature for much cheaper.
As i found out, the body control module controls the headlights and that the same module is used for both premium and non premium cars. The only thing different is the turn signal switch. So for this DIY, you need the following parts:
-Turn signal switch with Auto headlight button
-Light sensor
-(optional) Defroster grill
The total cost for me was 40 bucks
Here is what you need to do:
Remove these two screws from the bottom of the steering wheel.

Pop the lid off from the top and then remove the turn signal switch. There are two plastic tabs that hold it in. Just press those two and the turn switch will pop right out.
Pop in the new switch and reassemble.

Next, we need to add a light sensor to tell the car when to turn on the light. This is located on the defroster grill right under the windshield. So pop out the grill:

Initially, I thought that I would need to do the wiring from the sensor to BCM, but to my surprise, the car was already prewired for the sensor.

You can see the little white plug for the light sensor.
Now we need to make a hole on the grill to hold the sensor. I was fortunate have gotten the grill with the sensor, so here is a picture comparing the two grills.

You can see the light sensor right next to the grills.
So plug in the sensor, pop in the grill and you're all done. Takes about 30 minutes, 40 dollars, and you'll never forget to turn on the lights anymore

I've always wondered if the auto headlights were prewired. I saw on ebay all the time factory foglight kits for nissan muranos/altimas and most of them came with the factory turn stalks for the foglight switch but you had to pick the one with or without auto headlights depending on what your vehicle came with.
Now I know.
Awesome write up!
