Navigation Modification?

Is there any way to modify the navigation/dvd rom to get it to play dvd's?

I know there is the mod hack where you can alter it so that you can input information while moving, but other than going after market can you modify the OEM system to play dvd's?

Kind of a newb question, but im just trying to learn what i cant find through searching , lol
