Do I REALLY need to replace both tires?

I have a G35 Coupe (6-speed) with 4k miles on it and unfortunately picked up a nail in the side-wall of the rear driver side tire. Obviously, this tire needs to be replaced but the dealer is telling me I really should replace both the driver and the passenger side tires so they are both evenly worn. I could understand if the remaining driver side tire was worn it would make sense to replace both.

But, with 4k miles is this really necessary. Any advice would be appreciated because I'd hate to spend an extra $300 for another tire if I really don't need to.

Mark

Just get one. Go to your local tire dealer, i.e Discount Tire and get a Road Hazard Free Replacement Insurance. Since your tires are fairly new (they will measure your tire tread), you should be able to get insurance for all four tires. So next time it happened again, just bring it back to them and they'll replace it for free.

Well it also depends on how agressive you drive and the amount of thread life remaining on the tires. Can you use a ruler and measure the amount of thread remaining?

+1 Had the same problem. Nail in sidewall at 6k...bought a new tire at Wheel Works and Road Hazard for all 4 tires.

I would replace both of them, you are already about 25% in to the useful life of the tires anyway!

I've got 16K on my G35 and my tires are bald as can be....

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll replace that one tire for now and go with the road hazard insurance for all four if I can still get it.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to have the tires in stock right now so it looks like I'll be stuck in my SUV for at least a few days. Bummer.

Thanks for all the advice.

If I had to choose where I wanted my good tires (front or rear) I would def. have my good ones on the front. At least if you have a highspeed blow out in the rear, you will be able to control the car a lot better.

Okay, back on topic now...

If your tire has 4k miles on it, I would suggest to get the same brand of the previous one. Dont listen to the dealer, do what is fit for your own pocket. After all, you are the one pay for the bill and everything else in your car. Save your money for the major service or something else! No need to spend $300. Surely, with the new tire with other three (4K miles), you would feel a bit different but not much!! I could live with it!! you??

If you had 30K miles I'd have to agree. You only need to buy one tire and
don't buy it from the dealership........what B.S.!
